On Tuesday, April 23, 2019 the Trojan girls Track & Field Team traveled to Pendleton to compete in the Pendleton Invitational versus 12 other teams. The temperatures were in the upper 50s with a light breeze out of the west which made it feel cooler. The Trojans competed well and came away with a sixth place finish as a team with a score of 43. Seven of the eight teams in the Hoosier Heritage Conference (HHC) competed in the meet and the Trojans were the third HHC team in the team scorings behind New Palestine and Pendleton Heights but ahead of Greenfield Central, Mount Vernon, Delta, and Yorktown. Noblesville won the meet with a score of 134.

Starting out the meet in the 4 x 800 meter relay, freshman Amber Heera, who normally competes in sprint events, had to fill in for teammate Makayla McGowan at the last minute as McGowan was not feeling well. Heera in her first attempt at the 800 meter distance was a solid addition to her experienced teammates in the relay who were seniors Cheyanne Lazzell and Grace Lewis along with sophomore Emma Lawson. NC placed eleventh in the event.

Up next were the sprint and hurdle trials heats. Freshman Anyssa Hall continued to show her strength in the sprints by advancing to the finals in both the 100 and 200 meter dash trials. Freshman Ava Bell ran well, however, Bell placed just outside of advancing to the finals in the same events. Hall scored valuable points by placing eighth in both the 100 and 200 meter dash finals later in the meet. Hall’s highlight of the evening was advancing to the finals and placing second in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet 11 inches. Hall also ran her normal strong anchor-leg of the NC 4 x 100 meter relay team. On the night, with trials and finals, Hall ran 5 races and performed 6 jumps in the long jump where in a typical dual meet she would have ran 3 races and performed 3 jumps so it was a more difficult than normal night for the young freshman.

Sophomore Emma Thurman ran well and posted a solid time of 18.87 seconds in the 100 meter hurdle trials however did not advance to the finals. Thurman continued to improve her time in the 300 hurdles by placing eleventh in a time of 56.20 seconds which was a lifetime best performance. Thurman continued to lead NC in the high jump by placing eighth with a height of 4 feet 10 inches. Freshman Maggie Lewis, continuing to show promise by honing her jump skills, placed thirteenth with a height of 4 feet 6 inches.

Sophomore Bailey Cox had another impressive evening in the middle distance events. In the 1600 meter run, Cox stayed with the lead pack throughout the race making some very smart tactical moves to keep her in contention to finish in the top few spots. In the last lap of the four lap race Cox made her decisive surge on the back stretch, passing several competitors, into third place. Down the front stretch two competitors attempted to pass Cox back, however, she held them off to finish third in a season best time of 5:30.44 which was just over a second off of her personal best. Cox returned a little while later to compete in the 800 meter race. Again, Cox stayed in the hunt drafting off of the lead pack. On the second lap of the two lap race she moved into fourth place and held off a strong surge from two competitors hot on her heals to keep her fourth place position finishing in a time of 2:32.21. Also in the 1600 meter run was senior Grace Lewis posting a lifetime best 6:38.95. Rounding out the distance events was senior Cheyanne Lazzell in the 3200 meter run with a time of 16:24.78 which was over 30 seconds faster than her race the previous week at the same distance.

Sophomore Tristan Barr continued to be a solid points winner for the Trojans. Barr won the pole vault with a height of 11 feet. Barr, along with Hall, also made it to the finals in the long jump and placed sixth with a distance of 14 feet 9 inches which was a personal best ever jump. Barr performed her normal duties of providing strong lead off legs for the Trojans in the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter relays. The 4 x 100 relay squad, with additional team members Bell, Hall, and senior Grace Smith placed eighth. Bell also had strong performances as the second leg in both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter relays. Smith also had a solid night by scoring in both of her individual events. Smith placed fifth in the pole vault with a height of 8 feet 6 inches and followed with a seventh place effort in the 400 meter dash by clipping the tape in 1:07.13. Smith was also the anchor leg of the NC 4 x 400 meter relay squad.

In the throws the breezy and cooler temperatures made for challenging conditions. Senior Grace Bowers lead the Trojans in the shot put by placing ninth with a best throw of the evening at 32 feet 3 1/2 inches. Sophomore Eliza Madden followed in twelfth placed with a throw of 29 feet 8 inches. In the discus the wind was favorable but made the cold more of a problem. Madden led the Trojans in the discus by heaving 5 of 6 consistent throws of over 80 feet. These consistent throws advanced Madden to the finals in eighth place. Madden dropped to ninth place in the finals with still a very strong throw of 85 feet 1 1/2 inches. Senior Hannah Talbott did not make the finals and placed sixteenth overall with a throw of 76 feet 0 inches.

The Trojans compete next this Friday, April 26 at their home invitational starting at 5:00pm.
