On Tuesday, April 16, 2019 the girls and boys Track and Field Teams traveled to Greensburg to complete in three-way meet against Connersville and Greensburg. The temperatures were mild in the mid to upper 70s with strong winds out of the west.

The Trojans placed third as a team with 32 points. Greensburg won the boys meet with 69 points followed by Connersville with 60 points. The Trojans had some outstanding performances over the course of the evening and were without some key team members due to other activities such as an academic meet occurring at the same time. Senior Jaycee Wilburn continued to show his strength at the 800 and 400 meter distances. Wilburn was the lead-off leg of the NC winning 4 x 800 meter relay team to start off the running events competition. Wilburn’s 800 meter split of 2:05.9 seconds had the Trojans with a sizable lead when he handed the baton off to senior Ben Brock. Following the two seniors carrying the baton were two freshman. Skyler Dickey and Caleb Grow helped bring the baton to the tape with a winning time of 9:04.20 which was 18 seconds ahead of the Greensburg team.

Up next was the Trojan’s lone hurdler freshman Kyle Gabbard. Gabbard continued to score points for the Trojans as he has from the beginning of the season. Gabbard placed third in the 110 meter high hurdles with a time of 18.80 seconds and followed later in the meet with a second place finish in the 300 meter hurdles in a time of 49.60 seconds. Senior Trevor Morrison placed third in the 100 meter dash in 11.60 seconds. Gabbard was also part of NC’s third place 4 x 100 meter relay squad also consisting of sophomores Jace Logston, Dominique Strunk, and Layne Nicholson. Logtson immediately followed with a second place finish in the 400 meter dash by clipping the tape in 56.60 seconds. Nicholson and Morrison followed later in the meet with third and fourth place finishes respectively in the 200 meter dash. Nicholson ran a strong race contending for the second spot right up until the tape.

In the distance events, Ben Brock placed third in the 1600 meter run with minimal rest and recovery after his contribution to the NC winning 4 x 800 relay. Brock made a valiant effort to finish second in the 1600, however, he was passed down the home stretch and ended up third. Jaycee Wilburn had more time to recover from the relay and lead from the start of his 800 meter race with a strong win in a time of 2:07.30 which was almost 8 seconds ahead of the next competitor. Wilburn has won the 800 meter run five meets in a row. Freshman Skyler Dickey stepped up with his first win in the 3200 meter run. Dickey took it out from the start and finished 22 seconds ahead of the next runner. Dickey’s time was 10:55.10.

In the throws, sophomore Matt Bell continued to show his strength and versatility. Bell, still working on form had several fouls by stepping out of the ring. Bell placed second in the shot put using a half circle power throw with a distances of 40 feet and one half inch. Had Bell been able to stay in the ring he would have easily won the shot put. The discus throw was challenging for all competitors because of the strong winds out of the west. Bell placed fourth in the discus with a toss of 107 feet 4 inches.

The final event was the 4 x 400 meter relay where the Trojans placed a close second with a squad that included two athletes, Grow and Brock, who do not normally run in this event. Logston’s lead-off followed by Wilburn had NC in the lead. Grow was up next and fought hard to keep NC in contention. Brock was the anchor leg and got NC back in the lead down the back stretch and tried valiantly to keep the lead down the home stretch but Connersville’s last runner had a strong final kick to the finish. It was a solid effort for the NC boys especially with Brock’s 400 split of 54.30 seconds which was 4 seconds faster than he had ever ran for that distance.
