Greenfield-Central High School 1st 75
New Castle High School 2nd 55

On Tuesday, April 9, 2019 the NC Girls and Boys Track & Field teams traveled to Greenfield Central for a boys dual meet and a girls three-way meet including Mount Vernon. It was a good chance to compete with other conference schools as the teams prepare for the Hoosier Heritage Conference meets the first part of May. The weather was sunny and very favorable with temperatures in the low to mid-60s and a light breeze. Both NC teams continued to improve and placed high in several events. NC coaches are pleased with how the teams are progressing through the season and supporting each other.

Boys Meet Summary:

The Trojans finished second in the meet with a score of 55 compared to Greenfield’s 75 points. Freshman Kyle Gabbard had several strong performances and scored points for the Trojans. Gabbard placed second in the 110 meter high hurdles followed by a strong leg in the winning NC 4 x 100 meter relay squad and rounded out the night with a second place finish in the 300 intermediate hurdles.

Sophomore Jace Logston had a very solid and busy meet by competing in four events and placing first or second in all four. Logston started out the meet with second place in the 200 meter dash followed by a strong lead-off leg on the winning NC 4 x100 meter relay team. Following the relay completion, Logston then turned his attention almost immediately to the 400 meter run where he placed second to teammate senior Britton Adkins. These back to back races are especially difficult because of the short time between the events. Logston finished out the meet running the lead-off leg for the winning Trojan 4 x 400 team. Adkins won the 400 meter run in a time of 55.16 seconds and followed later in the meet with a strong anchor leg on the winning 4 x 400 relay team. This is the second meet in a row that Adkins and Logston placed first and second in the 400 meter race. Also in the sprints, senior Trevor Morrison had a strong night by helping both the 4 x 100 relay and the 4 x 400 relay teams to first place finishes. He ran a smart third leg of the 4 x 400 relay which gave the Trojans the lead in the final hand-off to Adkins. Morrison also placed second in the 200 meter dash in a time of 24.7 seconds.

In the distance events, senior Jaycee Wilburn repeated his winning ways in the 800 meter run by continuing to take risks leading from the front and showing great passion and determination holding off the competitor hot on his tail during the two lap race. Wilburn’s winning time was a near personal best 2:04.93. Freshman Caleb Grow is looking strong in the 800 meter run as well. Grow placed fourth in the race in a time of 2:18.62. Senior Ben Brock ran another solid 1600 meter race for the third meet in a row and placed second with a time of 4:58.09. In the 3200 meter run the NC duo of junior Austin Morgan and freshman Skyler Dickey took the lead early in the race and continued to work side-by-side the entire race to pull away from the rest of the field. Ultimately, Morgan pulled away from his teammate to win with a time of 10:42.50 followed closely by Dickey in second place with a time of 10:47.61 which was a personal best by 11 seconds faster than his 3200 performance the previous week.

Sophomore Matt Bell had a good night in the shot put and the discus with personal bests and second place postings in both with tosses of 42 feet and 107 feet 1 inch respectively. Sophomore Nate Smith was close behind his teammate Bell in the shot put and placed third with a toss of 40 feet 1 inch. Luke Witham, even though placing out of the standings, threw a personal bests in the shot and disc. Carter Dickerson placed third in the high jump with a height of 5 feet.

The Trojans compete next on Friday, April 12 against 14 other teams in the Park Tudor Small School Showcase invitational.
