On Tuesday, April 30 the NC boys and girls track & field teams hosted their final home meet of the season. The Trojans hosted former NCC foe Anderson and current HHC foe Pendleton Heights. It was a great evening for competition as the skies were clear and temperatures were in the mid to upper 60s with the only drawback being a fairly strong wind out of the west. Both teams continued to improve and posted several season best and lifetime best performances.
In the boys competition the Trojans finished third with 39 points. Pendleton won with 83 points followed by Anderson with 44 points.
The Trojans opened the meet with a strong win in the 3200 meter relay. Senior Jaycee Wilburn lead-off and established a commanding lead with an 800 split of 2:05.60. Wilburn handed-off to senior Ben Brock who lengthened the lead by posting an 800 split of 2:10.16 which equaled his previous personal best. Freshman Skyler Dickey was up next and kept NC with a solid lead going into the final hand-off to senior Britton Adkins. The NC winning time of 9:00.53 was 12 seconds ahead of the next competitor.
Up next was NC’s lone hurdler, freshman Kyle Gabbard, continuing to improve and score points for the team. Gabbard placed third in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 18.52 and 46.90 respectively. Gabbard also performed his normal duties as the second leg of the NC 4 x 100 relay squad. The Trojan 400 meter duo of Adkins and sophomore Jace Logston continued to show their strength in the event. Adkins and Logstion placed first and third in the event with times of 52.94 and 54.72 respectively.
In the sprints, senior Trevor Morrison, came out of the blocks hard from the start and for the second meet in a row won the 200 meter dash by nipping an Anderson competitor at the line. Morrison’s time in the 200 was 23.31. Also in the 200 meter dash, sophomore Dominique Strunk posted a personal best performance.
In the middle distance events, junior Austin Morgan had a strong race battling toward the front in the 1600 meter run. Morgan placed third in the event with his second best time of the season by clipping the tape in 4:53.10. Morgan followed later in the meet with a personal best in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:16.53. In the 800 meter run, Jaycee Wilburn took the lead from the start as he has done for the past several meets. Wilburn crossed the line in 2:03.86 for the win. Ben Brock, who normally runs the 1600, switched it up by running the 800 and continued to prove that he has the speed and versatility to race anything from the 400 to the 1600. Brock’s time of 2:08.07 was a personal best for the 800 and good for third place. Also posting a personal best in the 800 meter run was freshman Caleb Grow in 2:11.41. Wilburn and Brock returned later in the meet, along with Morrison and Adkins to form the NC squad in the 4 x 400 relay. Also in the distance events, freshman Skyler Dickey placed third in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:04.00.
In the jumps, Carter Dickerson placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 5 feet 2 inches and Layne Nicholson placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet 8 inches. NC had a good meet in the throws. Sophomore Matt Bell and freshman Cole Werking threw personal bests in the discus. Bell’s toss of 122 feet 10 inches was good for third place. Teammate Nate Smith followed in fourth place with a toss of 116 feet 3 inches. Nate Smith also placed third in the shot put with a distance of 41 feet 7.5 inches.
The Trojans compete again next on Thursday, May 9 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet held at Mt. Vernon High School. The meet starts at 5:30pm.
