On Thursday, April 22, 2021 the Trojan Girls and Boys Track & Field teams traveled to Wes Del to compete in a 3-way meet vs. Knightstown and Wes Del. Weather conditions were much more favorable than earlier in the week when the Trojans hosted a home meet in blinding snow and wind. On Thursday at Wes Del the weather queued up for top performances with sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 50s with a slight breeze out of the West. The New Castle coaches continue to be impressed with how this team comes out to compete every meet and rallies around each other to push their teammates to perform at their best. As the season inches closer to tournament time marks posted by most athletes are steadily improving.
Girls Meet Summary:
The Lady Trojans were victorious as a team scoring 94 points. Wes Del was 2nd with 48 points and Knightstown was 3rd with 14 points. The Lady Trojans won 12 out of 15 events in the meet, and in 6 of those events NC took 1st and 2nd place. Several Lady Trojans won multiple events. Junior Anyssa Hall and sophomore Ella Garvin, both with commanding performances throughout the meet, won three individual events each. Hall started off the meet by winning the long jump with a distance of 14 feet 11 inches. Hall followed with wins in the 100 meter dash in 13.00 seconds and the 200 meter dash in 28.10 seconds. Also kicking off the meet with a win was Garvin in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet 1 inch. Hall also ran the anchor leg of the NC winning 4×100 meter relay team. Garvin has consistently cleared 5 feet or 5 feet 1 inch in recent meets and that consistency will be essential as she strives to clear the bar at higher settings as tournament time approaches. Garvin followed shortly thereafter with a win in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.80 seconds. Later in the meet, Garvin won the 300 meter hurdle race in 50.50 seconds which was 9 seconds faster than the next competitor in just 300 meters. Garvin’s recent 300 meter hurdle marks inch her closer to being one of the top five in school history for the event. Sophomore Lydia Harvey came away with two individual wins as well as a win participating in the lead off leg of the NC 4×800 meter relay team. Harvey won the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:48.59 which was over 30 seconds faster than the next competitor. Harvey followed later in the meet with a commanding win and personal best performance in the 3200 meter run as she lapped the field with the next competitor finishing over 2 minutes after Harvey crossed the line. Harvey’s finishing time of 12:11.66 places her 4th on the Lady Trojans all-time list for the 3200 meter run.
The Lady Trojans had two winning relay squads. The NC 4×100 Meter Relay consisting of freshmen Maria Mil and Maritza Mil, junior Ambreet Heera, and Hall won going away in a time of 55.5 seconds. The Trojan 4×800 meter relay squad consisting of Harvey, sophomore Savannah Kernel, junior Jamie Kernel, and freshman Sydney Mathews, with a time of 12:15.41, finished a minute ahead of second place Wes Del.
In the throwing events the Lady Trojans took the first two places in both events. Senior Eliza Madden led the way followed closely by freshman teammate Alaina Bowman. In the discus, Madden, consistently throwing over 100 feet in recent meets, won the event with a throw of 103 feet 9 inches. Bowman followed in 2nd place with a mark of 91 feet 6 inches. In the shot put, Madden won with a toss of 30 feet 6 inches with Bowman not far behind posting a 2nd place mark of 26 feet 4 inches.
