New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team lost a heartbreaker to the Shelbyville Golden Bears 57 to 56. The Trojans got off to a great start on the offensive end of the floor. The Trojans moved the basketball and got wide open looks. We were able to knock shots down in the first quarter. On the defensive end the Trojans were doing what we wanted to do. We made the Golden Bears shoot contested jump shots and had great ball pressure that caused the guards to struggle. The Trojans were led in scoring by Cole McDaniel with 7 points. William Grieser had 5 points. Brandon Matney added 3 points. Collin Blessinger had 2 points. The Trojans were leading the Shelbyville Golden Bears 17 to 5 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter the Trojans continued to shoot the ball at a high percentage. The Trojans were playing great team basketball. We were turning down good shots for great shots. We did a really good job taking care of the basketball when Sheblyville turned up the pressure, but we did not let it affect us. On defense, we made Shelbyville work to get any shot off. We made the Golden Bears shoot contested shots and then finished with a rebound. The Trojans were led in scoring by Cole McDaniel with 5 points. William Grieser, Trey Miller, and Deven Fielden all had 2 points apiece. The Trojans had the lead at the half against the Shelbyville Golden Bears 28 to 18.

At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments offensively and defensively. Offensively, the Trojans wanted to be ready for a press or some type of trap. On the defensive end, the Trojans made a few adjustments how we were going to guard a few players, but other than that wanted to continue to move the ball and not let the Golden Bears get open looks and keep rebounding. Offensively, the Trojans continued to execute and move the basketball, but the last 3 minutes in the third quarter we forgot how to play basketball. Defensively, the Trojans continued to do a really good job on the Golden Bears, but the last 3 minutes of the quarter we forgot how to defend. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Cole McDaniel with 4 points. Caleb Grow and Trey Miller both had 3 points apiece. Collin Blessinger added 2 points. After the third quarter the Trojans had the lead over the Shelbyville Golden Bears 40 to 33.

In the fourth quarter, the Trojans could not take care of the basketball and struggled to shoot the ball. The Trojans let the Golden Bears get them all sped up and turned the ball over. Our turnovers led to wide open shots for the Golden Bears. On the defensive end, the Trojans let the Golden Bears shoot from wherever they wanted and did not contest anything they did. The Golden Bears got hot and just outplayed the Trojans for the last 10 minutes of the game. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring by Collin Blessinger and Cole McDaniel both had 6 points apiece. Dillon Bergum and Caleb Grow both added 2 points. The Trojans got beat by the Shelbyville Golden Bears 57 to 56.

Offensively, the Trojans did a really good job of sharing the basketball and moving it side to side. That led to wide open looks for the Trojans all night long. The Trojans played a great game for 22 minutes, but the last 10 minutes we feel apart and let the Golden Bears pressure get to us. Defensively, the Trojans did a good of forcing the Golden Bears players to shoot contested jump shots, and limiting their positions. The Trojans just fell apart the last 10 minutes and that led to the Golden Bears 18 to 0 run to end the 3rd quarter into the 4th quarter of the game. William Grieser and Derek Tabor did a nice job guarding the Huskies best player all night.
