New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team lost to a big and physical Greenwood Woodmen basketball team 46 to 34. The Trojans got off to a good start on the offensive end of the floor. The Woodmen came out in a 2-3 zone and we worked the ball and knocked down our first shot of the night. The Woodmen pressed the entire game make or miss and it caused the Trojans to make mistakes and turn the basketball over. On the defensive end the Trojans were making the were getting stops, but we could not get a rebound to save our lives. The Woodmen had multiple chances just about every possession down the floor. The Trojans were led in scoring by Cole McDaniel with 3 points. William Grieser and Collin Blessinger both had 2 points apiece. The Trojans were trailing the Greenwood Woodmen 11 to 7 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter the Trojans struggled to take care of the basketball against the Woodmens press. The Trojans also could not buy a basket. When we didn’t turn the ball over we got good looks, but could not knock any shots down. On defense, the Trojans battled and did a good job of forcing the Woodmen to take contested jump shots, but the Woodmen got there own offensive rebounds and it became a lay up drill. The Trojans were led in scoring by William Grieser with 3 points. The Trojans trailed at the half against the Greenwood Woodmen 24 to 10.

At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments offensively and defensively. Offensively, the Trojans wanted to take care of the basketball against the Woodmen’s pressure. Once we broke the press we wanted to get the basketball moving and get great shot opportunities. On the defensive end, the Trojans decided we had to mix it up and play zone against them. We did a good job in man, but could not rebound and that led to easy baskets. We tried a 3-2 zone and we missed rotations which led to easy points. Then, we went to a 1-3-1 and tried to get the Woodmen to speed up and it worked for about the first 5 minutes we were in it. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Cole McDaniel with 10 points. William Grieser added 3 points.Collin Blessinger had 1 point. After the third quarter the Trojans trailed the Woodmen of Greenwood 37 to 24.

In the fourth quarter, the Trojans got off to a fast start and cut the Woodmen lead down to 8 with 6 minutes to go. The Trojans started knocking down shots, but could never get enough going to cut it any closer. On the defensive end, the Trojans in the 1-3-1 go the Woodmen all sped up and they forced some shots which led to baskets for the Trojans. After a timeout the Woodmen made some adjustments and the Trojans could not pull any closer. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring by Cole McDaniel with 7 points. Trey Miller added 3 points. The Trojans got beat by the Greenwood Woodmen 46 to 34.

Offensively, the Trojans could not get anything going the entire night. The Trojans turned the ball over 16 times on the night against the Woodmens pressure. We also had a tough time getting any shots to fall. The Trojans went on a stretch for about 5 minutes were we looked like we were in a flow. Cole McDaniel led the way offensively for the Trojans. Defensively, the Trojans did a good job, but we could not rebound, and that led to a bunch of second chance points for the Woodmen. The 1-3-1 zone sped the Woodmen up for about 5 minutes and that is when we made a little run, but they settled down and made a few adjustments and were able to hang on.

The Trojans were led in scoring by Cole McDaniel with 20 points.William Grieser added 8 points. Collin Blessinger and Trey Miller both had 3 points.

The New Castle Trojans are 1-1 to start the season. The New Castle Trojans will be back in action Friday, December 6 against the Hamilton Heights Huskies at Hamilton Heights High School. The Varsity game will tip off at 7:30pm. Go Trojans!!!
