New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team won a conference basketball game against the Greenfield-Central Cougars 63-53. The Trojans got off to a slow start on the offensive end. We were moving the basketball and getting good looks, but we just struggled to knock them down. The Trojans were very good to start the game on the defensive end. They stopped the lane drives and made the Cougars shoot the ball from the perimeter. The Trojans were led in scoring by Mason Hardwick with 7 points. Luke Bumbalough added 6 points. The Trojans had the lead over the Greenfield-Central Cougars after the first quarter 13 to 7.
The second quarter the Trojans continued to struggle shooting the ball, but started attacking the basket and got some easy points. The Trojans continued to play great team defense and made Greenfield keep shooting the ball from the outside. The Trojans were led in scoring by Blake Burris with 3 points. Luke Bumbalough, Mason Hardwick, and Brandon Matney all had 2 points apiece. The Trojans were leading at the half over the Greenfield-Central Cougars 22 to 20.
At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments on both ends of the floor. Offensively, the Trojans wanted to continue to push the basketball in transition and continue to get good looks at the basket but have to convert. Defensively, the Trojans wanted to pick up the pace of the game so we picked up the pressure. The Trojans wanted to get Greenfield to force things and hope the Trojans get turnovers and easy baskets. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 9 points. Blake Burris added 3 points. Mason Hardwick and Brandon Matney both had 2 points apiece. After the third quarter the Trojans had the lead over the Cougars 40 to 38.
The fourth quarter the Trojans defensive pressure got to the Spartans and caused them to turn the ball over and take bad shots. The Trojans did a great job rebounding. On the offensive end the Trojans shots started to fall and the lead started to increase. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring in by Luke Bumbalough with 12 points. Nicolas Grieser added 5 points. Blake Burris and Mason Hardwick both had 3 points apiece. The Trojans beat the Greenfield-Central Cougars 63 to 53.
Offensively, the Trojans could not get anything going for the first two quarters of the basketball game. In the second half the Trojans finally started hitting shots and got the momentum on their side. The Trojans defense led to their offense. Luke Bumbalough led the way on the offensive end with hitting big shots and kept making the extra pass to get his teammates involved the entire game. He trusted that his teammates would start hitting shots and they did. Blake Burris, and Mason Hardwick hit big shots throughout the game. Defensively, the Trojans could not did a great job the first half playing team defense and forcing the Cougars to shoot jump shots. In the third quarter the Trojans relaxed and let the Cougars get to the paint and hit some easy shots, but in the fourth the Trojans locked the Cougars up. The Trojans did a great job rebounding the basketball.
The Trojans led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 29 points. Mason Hardwick added 17 points. Blake Burris had 8 points and Nicolas Grieser had 7 points. Brandon Matney added 42 points.
The Trojans are 6-5 on the season. The New Castle Trojans will be back in action Friday, January 18 against the Yorktown Tigers at the New Castle Field House. The Varsity game will tip at approximately 7:30pm. Go Trojans!!!
