New Castle JV Boys Basketball Team beat a very big and talented Greenwood Woodmen basketball team on Friday night 45 to 42. The Trojans got off to a slow start on the offensive end of the floor. The Trojans had a tough time taking care of the basketball early in the game and let the Woodmen’s pressure on defense cause us to turn the ball over. On the defensive end the Woodmen were able to do anything they wanted with little push back from the Trojans. The Trojans felt like we could just show up and we would win the game. The Trojans were led in scoring in the first quarter by Sam Maddy and Gavin Welch both with 3 points. Jackson Clapp added 2 points. The Trojans trailed the Greenwood Woodmen at the end of the first quarter 11 to 8.

The second quarter the Trojans continued to do the same things on both ends of the floor. On the offensive end we turned the ball over multiple times. We were just making careless turnovers. We also struggled tremendously from the free throw line the entire night. On the defensive end the Trojans started to play a little better, but started giving up way to many paint touches and second chance points. The Trojans were led in scoring by Jackson Clapp with 5 points. Sam Maddy added 2 points. The Trojans trailed the Greenwood Woodmen at the half 20 to 15.

At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments on both sides of the ball at half. On offense, we wanted to take care of the basketball and start our offense a little differently to try to get a mismatch. We also wanted to get the basketball moving side to side and make the Woodmen have to work a little on defense. Defensively, we wanted to mix up our defenses and try to catch the Woodmen off guard and get the game going at our pace. In the third quarter the Trojans got sloppy on both ends of the floor, but midway through the third after a timeout the Trojans started clicking. The Trojans took care of the basketball and got the match-ups we wanted and took advantage of them. Defensively, the Trojans went to a zone and it caused Greenwood to stand out on the perimeter and shoot perimeter jump shots, the rest of the game. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Gavin Welch with 6 points. Isaac French and Kyler Sears both added 5 points apiece. Sam Maddy contributed 3 points. After the third quarter the Trojans were leading the Woodmen 34 to 29.

To start the fourth quarter, the Trojans wanted to make sure we valued every position and got the best shot possible. We got off to a fast start and took our lead to about 14 points. Then, Greenwood started fouling and we couldn’t hit a free throw to save our lives the entire game. Defensively, the Trojans made the Woodmen settle for jump shots and continued to hold them to one shot opportunity every time down the floor. The Woodmen made a late run late in the game, but the Trojans hit just enough free throws and just enough stops to win the game. The Trojans were led in scoring by Sam Maddy with 6 points. Nate Smith added 2 points. Ethan Hinton, Gavin Welch, and Kyler Sears all had 1 point apiece. The Trojans beat the Greenwood Woodmen with a final score of 45 to 42.

Offensively, the Trojans got off to a terrible start the first half. We could not take care of the basketball and could not get a shot to fall. The second half we got the basketball moving and started to knock shots down. The Trojans were terrible from the free throw line all night. We were 50% from the line as a team. Sam Maddy and Gavin Welch led the way offensively knocking down big shots and getting our guys in an offense. Kyler Sears came off the bench and gave the Trojans a spark with offensive rebounds and put backs. Defensively, the Trojans got off to a slow start. We let the Woodmen drive right around us and get easy shot opportunities. We also were letting them multiple second chance opportunities. In the second half the Trojans got things figured out and had to go to a zone that kind of startled the Woodmen. They stopped attacking the basketball and just settled for jump shots, the rest of the night. Nate Smith and Jackson Clapp controlled the boards for the Trojans in the second half.

The Trojans were led in scoring by Sam Maddy with 14 points. Gavin Welch had 10 points. Jackson Clapp added 7 points. Kyler Sears had 6 points. Isaac French added 5 points. Nate Smith contributed 2 points and Ethan Hinton added 1 point.
