On Saturday, September 22, the New Castle Girls & Boys Cross Country Teams competed in their fifth meet of the season participating in the Delta Invitational hosted at the Muncie Sportsplex. With temperatures between 55 and 60 degrees and lower humidity the weather conditions were much more conducive to racing than previous weeks. The course had much more solid footing than the wet course of last week. The Trojans will be competing on this course again next week at the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet. The course is normally a fast course and many NC athletes posted their personal record (PR) times or personal best 5K times for the season. The NC coaches were very pleased with the efforts put forth by both the girls and boys teams.
The Trojan girls team competed against 7 other schools. Freshman Lily Saunders lead the team with an impressive race. Lily got out fast and stayed in the top 10 the entire race eventually finishing 8th with a personal best 22:12 posting which was 1:09 faster than the previous week. Lily has dropped almost 2 minutes off of her personal best in the past 2 weeks. Senior Grace Lewis ran an exceptional race. Grace has battled for several years to rehabilitate after two separate hip surgeries and in this race all of that hard work and determination paid off. Grace had a brief scare during the middle of the race as she rolled an ankle while passing another competitor but she kept running through it and finished 15th in a time of 22:48 which was PR by over a minute. Senior Cheyanne Lazzell had a rough day while struggling with her chronic back pain throughout the race finishing a bit off of her posting of the previous week finishing 46th in 29:54.
The team competes again next Saturday, September 29 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet hosted at the Muncie Sportsplex. The girls race begins at 10am.
