New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team lost a tough game to a very talented Carmel Greyhound basketball team 44 to 36. The Trojans got off to a good start on both ends of the floor. The Trojans took care of the basketball and moved the ball and got high percentage shots. The Trojans made Carmel work for every shot opportunity they took. We contested the shots and blocked out and rebounded the ball. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough 6 points. Nicolas Grieser added 2 points. The Trojans were trailing the Carmel Greyhounds 10 to 8 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter the Trojans continued to value positions and made the Carmel defense have to work. The Trojans made the extra pass but struggled knocking down shots from the outside. On the defensive end the Trojans did a really nice job of being physical with the Greyhounds and making them shoot contested jump shots. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 5 points. Nicolas Grieser added 3 points. William Grieser had 2 points. The Trojans had the lead at the half over the Carmel Greyhounds 18 to 17.

At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments offensively and defensively. Offensively, the Trojans wanted to do a better job of moving off of the basketball a setting screens. Defensively, the Trojans wanted to double the post a little different and change how we were guarding certain actions Carmel put us in. On the offensive end, the Trojans executed the adjustments and continued to value positions and not take bad shots. The Trojans continued to struggle hitting shots. On the defensive end, the Trojans continued to make Carmel work but we gave up a few second chance opportunities and Carmel capitalized on those. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 8 points. After the third quarter, the Trojans trailed the Greyhounds 28-26.

In the fourth quarter, the Trojans continued to struggle hitting outside shots and struggled from the free throw line. We got the shots we wanted we just could not knock them down. The Trojans had to foul late and Carmel did not miss many free throws the entire game. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring in by Luke Bumbalough with 6 points. Blake Burris and Nicolas Grieser both added 2 points. The Trojans got beat by the Carmel Greyhounds 44-36.

Offensively, the Trojans did exactly what we wanted we valued positions and made Carmel work on the defensive end. We knew coming into the game that the Trojans perimeter shooters had to be hitting to have a shot to win this basketball game. We also struggled from the free throw line as a team only knocking down 65% for the game. That is not good enough when you are facing a team as talented as Carmel. Defensively, the Trojans made Carmel work and hit contested shots all game long. The Trojans made Carmel’s big man work his tail off all night long. The Trojans played the best all around defensive game that we have played all year on Saturday night, but just couldn’t get the offense clicking on all cylinders.

The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 25 points. Nicolas Grieser had 7 points. Blake Burris and William Grieser both had 2 points.

The New Castle Trojans are 8-6 this season. The New Castle Trojans will be back in action Thursday, January 31 at the New Castle Fieldhouse to play the Beech Grove Hornets. The Varsity game will tip at approximately 7:30pm. Go Trojans!!!
