New Castle High School 8th 224

On Saturday, September 29, the New Castle Girls & Boys Cross Country Teams competed in the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet hosted by Delta and held at the Muncie Sportsplex. With temperatures in the low to mid fifty degree range the weather conditions were conducive to racing, however, due to heavy rains after last week’s meet the course was a bit soft and slower for most competitors. New Palestine won both the girls and boys team competitions.

The Trojan boys team placed 8th as a team. Some on the team continued to struggle with various injuries and associated pains. Senior Jaycee Wilburn led the Trojans got out at the starting gun as he had the previous week with his first mile split time not too far of last week’s split at the same mark. Jaycee lost ground during the middle mile of the race but battled back the final mile to finish just 19 seconds off his time from last week finishing in 18:38 and placing 32nd. Senior Ben Brock has had the goal of eclipsing the 18:00 minute barrier for the 5K distance the past 2 years. Brock was 36 seconds of that goal the previous week and set out to meet that goal again this week. Ben fought hard the entire race passing many competitors and posted his second fastest time of the season, however, he fell short of the 18 minute goal placing 39th in a time of 18:53. Sophomore Quentin Hedges was next for the team with another impressive performance. Quentin started the race a bit slow at the beginning but then took off and crossed the mile mark 15 seconds faster than last week. Quentin put on multiple significant surges during the middle of the race passing some competitors as if they were standing still. By the final stages of the race Hedges was fighting to hang on for the finish clearly showing that he had left all his best efforts out on the course. Ultimately, Quentin finished a respectable 4 seconds off his personal best time from the previous week placing 49th in 19:43. Senior Britton Adkins was next and was way off of his normal pace and was falling back through the field the better part of the race. Britton said after the race that his legs felt heavy. Britton finished 51st in a time of 19:52. Junior Ben Head took a risk and went out faster than the past few races. Ben fell off a bit during the last 2 miles of the race and finished in 53rd place in a time of 20:26. Senior Tray Owens and Sophomore Ayden Humbles finished right together in 54th and 55th place just nine tenths of a second apart in times of 20:58.0 and 20:58.9 respectively. Tray continued to push through pain from an ankle he twisted a few weeks back and Ayden fighting IT (Iliotibial) band pain which kept him out of last week’s competition.

In the Junior Varsity race several Trojans posted or were close to their personal best times. Sophomore Skyler Dickey lead the charge. Skyler was coming off of an exceptional race last week where he ran with and pushed Quentin Hedges the entire race. With Quentin in the varsity race this week it was Skyler’s turn to lead the JV squad. Junior Luke Carter worked with Skyler a good portion of the race but eventually Skyler pulled away and finished just 9 seconds shy of his time last week placing 27th in a time of 19:48. Skyler’s coaches are very impressed with how he has progressed this season and learning how to run a smart and effective race. Luke also had a good race running with Skyler and pushing each other as long as he could. Ultimately, Luke finished 40th in a time of 20:31 fighting ankle, shin, and hip pains. Sophomore Ben Hall ran a solid race just 26 seconds off the previous week in a time of 20:53 and placing 48th. What followed was a trio of personal best times by athletes new to the team this season. Sophomore Dominic Reynolds cut 15 seconds of his previous best and finished in 21:24 which was good for 56th place. Dominic went out fast and held a solid pace especially during the middle portion of the race. Freshman Xander Bray ran very consistent mile spot times and finished with an exceptional final mile. Xander cut 32 seconds of his previous best with a time of 22:48 and placing 59th. Sophomore Jaiden Johnson is learning to hold the pace later in the race and finished with a personal best by 15 seconds. Jaiden placed 75th in a time of 22:48. Junior Will Hayes posted his second fastest race of the season. Will went out fast and had competitors around him from other schools to help push the pace. Will finished in a time of 31:45 in 126st place.

The teams race again next Saturday, October 6 in tournament competition at the Sectional meet hosted at Connersville High School.
