On Saturday, September 22, the New Castle Girls & Boys Cross Country Teams competed in their fifth meet of the season participating in the Delta Invitational hosted at the Muncie Sportsplex. With temperatures between 55 and 60 degrees and lower humidity the weather conditions were much more conducive to racing than previous weeks. The course had much more solid footing than the wet course of last week. The Trojans will be competing on this course again next week at the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet. The course is normally a fast course and many NC athletes posted their personal record (PR) times or personal best 5,000 meter race times for the season. The NC coaches were very pleased with the efforts put forth by both the girls and boys teams.
The Trojan boys team competed against 8 other schools in the race and placed 6th as a team. The team continued to push through or recover from various injuries. Senior Jaycee Wilburn led the Trojans with a solid race and a season best 18:19 time and placing 18th. Senior Britton Adkins, who has lead the Trojans the past few weeks, was forced to drop out of the race around the half-way point due to severe lower back pain. Senior Ben Brock has been working since the beginning of summer and throughout the season to recover from an injury and gain running strength. Ben looked very strong during the race with several assertive surges and passing competitors throughout eventually placing 23rd in a time of 18:36 which was a season best by 31 seconds. Junior Ben Head also ran strong, recovering from a recent injury, placed 33rd, posted a personal best 19:30, which was 18 seconds faster than his previous best (19:48). Junior Luke Carter was put into the varsity race fairly last minute as Ayden Humbles was limping after warm-up due to IT (Iliotibial) band pain he has been dealing with recently. Luke stepped up to the challenge and ran his fasted race of the season, which was a minute faster than the previous week, finishing in 19:50 and placing 39th. Senior Traye Owens fought through ankle pain which started after rolling the ankle during a recent workout. Traye was visibly struggling through most of the race yet finished 5 seconds faster than ever before with a time of 20:19 which was good for 46th place. Sophomore Ben Hall rounded out the varsity squad placing 47th with a season best time of 20:27 which was 35 seconds faster than he has ran this year.
The Trojan boys team had four runners competing in the junior varsity race. Sophomore Quentin Hedges and freshman Skylar Dickey worked together and pushed each other the entire race. Quentin has had some solid races this season and Skylar is learning how to push himself in a race. So, their coaches suggested that Skylar run with Quentin as long as he could during the race. Skylar did just that. Quentin ran a great race and really pushed the middle mile with several strong surges and passing other competitors. Skylar stuck right with Quentin the entire race. The final margin between the two at the finish line was six tenths of a second. Quentin placed 19th in a time of 19:39.2 which was 1:24 faster than his previous best. Skylar placed 20th in a time of 19:39.8 which was almost 2 minutes faster than his previous best. Freshman Xander Bray bettered his previous by one second placing 50th in 22:07. Junior Will Hayes continued his quest to break 30 minutes for the 5K distance. Will fell a bit short of the goal for the race but still ran an impressive 1:26 faster than he had before. Will finished in a time of 30:17 in 71st place.
The teams compete again next Saturday, September 29 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet hosted at the Muncie Sportsplex. The girls race begins at 10am.
