New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team won a conference basketball game against the Yorktown Tigers 76-53. The Trojans got off to a great start on the offensive end of the floor. Luke Bumbalough was drawing a ton of attention and he kept finding the open guys for wide open shots. We were knocking down our outside shots and then that led to open lanes to the basket. On defense, the Trojans made it hard for the Tigers to get anything going. The Trojans forced the Tigers to turn the ball of multiple times in the first quarter and that led to transition opportunities. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough and Mason Hardick both with 8 points. Nicholas Grieser added 2 points. The Trojans had the lead over the Tigers after the first quarter 18 to 8.
The second quarter the Trojans continued to knock down open shots and get whatever they wanted every time down the floor. The Trojans on the defensive end struggled to get stops. The Trojans started to relax on the defensive end and let Yorktown get going on the offensive end of the floor. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 9 points. Mason Hardwick added 3 points. Blake Burris, Nicholas Grieser, and Cole McDaniel all had 2 points apiece. The Trojans were leading at the half over the Yorktown Tigers 36 to 24.
At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments on the defensive end of the floor. Offensively, the Trojans wanted to continue to push the basketball in transition and continue to make the extra pass for great looks at the basket. Defensively, the Trojans wanted to pick up the ball pressure and be locked in as a unit of the defensive end of the floor. We wanted to stop giving up lane drives which leads to easy looks for the opposing team. We followed everything we wanted to do on both end of the floor in the third quarter and blew the game wide open and it all started on the defensive end. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 11 points. Mason Hardwick added 8 points. Cole McDaniel had 3 points. Nicholas Grieser and William Grieser both had 2 points apiece. After the third quarter the Trojans had the lead over the Tigers 62 to 33.
The fourth quarter the Trojans were able to get every player in the basketball game. The Trojans did not finish the game like we wanted to on both ends of the floor, but the young guys have to get time in a varsity game to gain experience for the next few years. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring in by Cole McDaniel with 5 points. Trey Miller added 4 points. Luke Bumbalough and Mason Hardwick both had 2 points. Nolan Beam added 1 point. The Trojans beat the Yorktown Tigers 76 to 53.
Offensively, the Trojans did a great job of making the extra pass all night. The Trojans were sharing the basketball and were knocking down looks from the outside. Once we started hitting shots from the perimeter that opened up driving lanes for easy lay up opportunities. Mason Hardwick and Cole McDaniel did a great job of hitting shots. Luke Bumbalough did a fantastic job of getting his teammates involved and then took advantage of the opportunities he got. Defensively, the Trojans did a great job defensively the first and third quarters. The Trojans made it hard for Yorktown to get anything in those two quarters. The Trojans forced double digit turnovers in those two quarters alone. The second and fourth quarters the Trojans were lazy and not locked in on the defensive end. The Trojans still need to improve on the defensive end of the floor, but have got better throughout the season. The Trojans are doing a lot better job of packing there defense in and making teams hit contested jump shots consistently.
The Trojans led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 30 points. Mason Hardwick added 21 points. Cole McDaniel had 10 points and Nicholas Grieser added 6 points. Trey Miller had 4 points. Blake Burris and William Grieser both had 2 points. Nolan Beam added 1 point.
The Trojans are 7-5 on the season. The New Castle Trojans will be back in action Tuesday, January 22 against the Lapel Bulldogs at Lapel High School. The Varsity game will tip at approximately 7:30pm. Go Trojans!!!
