New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball team beat a big and physical New Palestine Dragons basketball team 73 to 67. The Trojans got off to a great start on the offensive end of the floor. The Trojans were hot shooting the basketball. The Trojans did a nice job of making the extra passes and getting the ball to the open guy. On defense, the Trojans were not ready to play and let the Dragons do whatever they wanted. The Dragons were able to get the basketball to the paint anytime they wanted, and that led to easy baskets for the Dragons. The Trojans were led in scoring by Cole McDaniel with 8 points. Collin Blessinger, Brandon Matney, and Trey Miller all had 3 points apiece. William Grieser added 2 points. The Trojans were leading the New Palestine Dragons after the first quarter 19 to 16.
The second quarter the Trojans continued to make the extra pass and knock down shots. The Trojans continued to run their offense and that put them in position to execute. The Trojans defense led to easy basket opportunities for there offense. Defensively, the Trojans locked it down of the defensive end. The Trojans contained the basketball and made the Dragons shoot tough contested jump shots. The Trojans did a great job rebounding the ball and got the ball out in transition. The Trojans were led in scoring by Cole McDaniel with 6 points. William Grieser added 4 points. Trey Miller and Dene Fielden both had 3 points apiece. Brandon Matney added 2 points. The Trojans were leading at the half over the New Palestine Dragons 37 to 22.
At the half, the Trojans made adjustments on both ends of the floor. Offensively, the Trojans wanted to continue to push the basketball up the floor, but with the lead we have established new we needed to be smart. We wanted to make sure we valued positions, and got the best shot opportunity possible. Defensively, the Trojans wanted to guard New Pals best player a little different. We wanted to make him get rid of the basketball and not get it back. On the offensive end, the Trojans did what we talked about and we stayed hot shooting the basketball. Defensively, the Trojans started out executed the adjustment and then we got lazy and let the best player do whatever he wanted. He did not always score but his penetration led to baskets for his teammates. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by William Grieser with 6 points. Trey Miller added 5 points. Collin Blessinger had 3 points. Deven Fielden and Brandon Matney each had 2 points. After the third quarter the Trojans were leading Dragons of New Palestine 55 to 40.
The fourth quarter the Trojans had trouble taking care of the basketball. The Trojans let New Palestines pressure cause us to throw the ball all over the gym. When we broke the press and settled down on the offensive end we were able to get great looks at the basket. On defense, the Trojans turnovers led to easy baskets for the Dragons. The Trojans were lucky we built a substantial lead going into the 4th quarter. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring by Trey Miller with 6 points. Brandon Matney had 5 points. William Grieser added 4 points. Collin Blessinger had 3 points. The Trojans beat the New Palestine Dragons 73 to 67.
Offensively, the Trojans did a great job of moving the basketball and knocking down wide open jump shots. The Trojans took care of the basketball for the first 3 quarters. In the 4th quarter the Trojans got careless with the basketball and let New Palestine get back into the game. Trey Miller hit some big shots to help the Trojans get a big conference win. William Grieser did a great job of attacking the basket and hitting shots around the rim. He also drove the basketball and was able to kick it out for wide open shots on the perimeter. Defensively, the Trojans did a great job of guarding the basketball the entire game. The Trojans followed the game plan the entire game. The only time the Trojans struggled was after a turnover and the Dragons were able to get easy shot opportunities. The Trojans rebounded the basketball great all game long. Cole McDaniel did a good job guarding the Dragons best player. Collin Blessinger and Brandon Matney controlled the glass for the Trojans all night.
The Trojans led in scoring by Trey Miller with 17 points. William Griser had 16 points. Cole McDaniel added 14 points. Brandon Matney had 12 points. Collin Blessinger contributed 9 points. Deven Fielden had 5 points.
The New Castle Trojans are 4-3 to start the season. The New Castle Trojans will be back in action Saturday, December 21 against the Muncie Burris Owls at the New Castle Fieldhouse. The Varsity game will tip off at 7:30pm. Go Trojans!!!
