New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team beat a very athletic Beech Grove Hornets basketball team 59 to 44. The Trojans got off to a good start on the offensive end of the floor. The Trojans did a good job of sharing the basketball and was getting any shot they wanted every time down the floor. On defense, the Trojans did a great job of making Beech Grove work for everything they got on the offensive end. The Trojans contained the basketball and made Beech Grove hit contested jump shots. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 11 points. Nicholas Grieser added 4 points. Mason Hardwick had 3 points. The Trojans had the lead over the Hornets after the first quarter 18 to 13.
The second quarter the Trojans continued to knock down open shots and get whatever they wanted every time down the floor. The Trojans did a good job of making the extra pass the entire game. The Trojans continued to play extremely hard on defense making the Hornets work hard for any shot attempt they took. The Trojans also did a very good job rebounding the basketball as a team. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 7 points. Nicolas Grieser and Cole McDaniel both added 4 points apiece. The Trojans were leading at the half over the Beech Grove Hornets 33 to 26.
At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Offensively, the Trojans wanted to continue to push the basketball in transition and continue to make the extra pass for great looks at the basket. The one thing we wanted to do was put different defenders for the Hornets in ball screens. Defensively, the Trojans wanted to pick up the ball pressure and be locked in as a unit of the defensive end of the floor. We wanted to continue to make Beech Grove work every position down the floor and keep the basketball in front of us and do not give up lane drives. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Nicolas Grieser with 4 points. Cole McDaniel added 3 points. Blake Burris and Luke Bumbalough both had 2 points apiece. After the third quarter the Trojans had the lead over the Hornets 44 to 37.
The fourth quarter the Trojans were able to extend the lead all because we stayed locked in on the defensive end of the floor. The Trojans continued to execute offensively and we made the extra pass all night long. On defense, the Trojans made it hard for Beech Grove to do anything on the offensive end on Thursday night. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring in by Luke Bumbalough with 6 points. Nicolas Grieser added 4 points. Collin Blessinger had 3 points and Blake Burris had 2 points. The Trojans beat the Beech Grove Hornets 59 to 44.
Offensively, the Trojans did a great job of pushing the basketball in transition and finding the open guy for a great shot. The Trojans did a great job of taking care of the basketball. The Trojans made the Beech Grove defense work every single time down the floor. Luke Bumbalough and Nicolas Grieser led the way for the Trojans on the offensive end. Cole McDaniel came in off the bench and hot some big shots. Defensively, the Trojans did a great job defensively the entire game. The Trojans made it hard for Beech Grove to get in their offense and do what they wanted. The Trojans made Beech Grove shoot contested jump shots and held the Hornets to one shot every position. The Trojans played great team defense.
The Trojans led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 26 points. Nicolas Grieser added 16 points. Cole McDaniel had 7 points. Blake Burris added 4 points. Mason Hardwick and Collin Blessinger both had 3 points.
The Trojans are 9-6 on the season. The New Castle Trojans will be back in action Tuesday, February 5 against the Hamilton Southeastern Royals at Hamilton Southeastern High School. The Varsity game will tip at approximately 7:30pm. Go Trojans!!!
