New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team lost a hard fought basketball game against the Westfield Shamrocks 61 to 53. The Trojans got off to a good start on the offensive end of the floor, but the Shamrocks were playing a triangle and 2 on Bumbalough the entire game. The Trojans hit shots and moved the basketball in the first quarter. On the defensive end the Trojans played alright, but did not follow the scouting report and let a player do exactly what the scouting report said. He drove right every single time down the floor all the way to the rim. The Trojans were led in scoring by Mason Hardwick with 11 points. Blake Burris added 3 points. The Trojans were leading the Westfield Shamrocks 14 to 13 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter the Trojans struggled to hit shots from the outside in the second quarter against the Shamrocks junk defense. The Trojans got any shot the wanted but just have to be able to knock them down. On defense, the Trojans did the same thing as the first quarter. We did not follow the scouting report and let the same guy for Westfield destroy us by driving the basketball right every single time. The Trojans were led in scoring by Blake Burris and Mason Hardwick both had 3 points apiece. Nicolas Grieser and William Grieser both added 2 points. The Trojans were trailing the Shamrocks of Westfield at the half 27 to 24.
At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments offensively and defensively. Offensively, the Trojans wanted to try to get Bumbalough involved in some way even though Westfield had two guys on him at all times. On the offensive end, the Trojans did not execute the adjustments we tried to make but the Trojan players made shots and kept us in the basketball game. On the defensive end, the Trojans wanted to do a better job of following the scouting report. Everything that Westfield did on offense was exactly what was on the scouting report. The Trojans did a nice job of rebounding the basketball and limiting the Shamrocks to one shot every time down the floor in the third quarter. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Nicolas Grieser with 7 points. Blake Burris added 6 points. William Grieser and Luke Bumbalough both had 2 points. After the third quarter the Trojans trailed the Shamrocks 44 to 41.
In the fourth quarter, the Trojans struggled to hit shots from the perimeter and could not get anything going. Our defense was solid in the fourth quarter and we got stops, but we could not convert and get the lead. We would cut it to 1 point multiple times but just couldn’t get over the hump. Then late in the fourth the Trojans had to foul and the Shamrocks hit the free throws. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring in by Nicolas Grieser with 5 points. Blake Burris and Cole McDaniel both had 3 points. Mason Hardwick added 1 point. The Trojans got beat by the Westfield Shamrocks 61-53.
Offensively, the Trojans could never get in a flow against the junk defense of Westfield. The Trojans hit shots from the perimeter, but did not take advantage of the numbers we had. We were playing 4 on 3 all night long. The Shamrocks did exactly what they planned on doing. They tool Bumbalough out of the basketball game, and was making somebody else beat them. It worked this time but we will go back and watch the film and see what we need to do against that defense to get higher percentage shots. Defensively, the Trojans just need to do a better job of following the scouting report. Everything Westfield did from personal to team stuff was exactly what we discussed in the scouting report. We just have to do a better job, be locked in, know our assignments, and what they do.
The Trojans were led in scoring by Blake Burris and Mason Hardwick both had 15 points on the night. Nicolas Grieser added 14 points. William Grieser had 4 points, Cole Mcdaniel added 3 points. Luke Bumbalough had 2 points.
