New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team lost a heartbreaker last night against a very big and physical Hamilton Southeastern Royals basketball team 71 to 70. The Trojans got off to a good start on both ends of the floor. The Trojans took care of the basketball and moved the ball and got high percentage shots. The Trojans made Hamilton Southeastern work for every shot opportunity they took. We contested the shots and blocked out and rebounded the ball. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough 13 points. Mason Hardwick added 6 points. Blake Burris had 2 points. The Trojans had the lead over the Royals 21 to 19 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter the Trojans continued to value positions and made the Royals defense have to work. The Trojans made the extra pass and continued to knock down open jump shots. On the defensive end the Trojans did a really nice job of being physical with the Royals and making them shoot contested jump shots. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 7 points. Blake Burris added 2 points The Trojans had the lead at the half over the Hamilton Southeastern Royals 30 to 29.
At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments offensively and defensively. Offensively, the Trojans wanted to do a better job of moving off of the basketball and setting screens. Defensively, the Trojans wanted to switch up how we was guarding the post. On the offensive end, the Trojans executed the adjustments and continued to value positions and took care of the basketball. The Trojans were hitting shots and making the Royals defense work on every position. On the defensive end, the Trojans continued to make HSE work for every opportunity they got. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 12 points. Nicolas Grieser added 5 points. Mason Hardwick had 3 points. After the third quarter, the Trojans had the lead over the Royals 50 to 46.
In the fourth quarter, the Trojans struggled taking care of the basketball and that led to easy baskets for the Royals. The Hamilton Southeastern Royals started trapping everything and played crazy the last four minutes of the game and they finally sped the Trojans up. The Royals drove the basketball hard to the rim and got a lot of easy baskets. The Trojans were up one points with 14 seconds left and the Royals hit a last second 16 foot jump shot to beat the Trojans. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring in by Luke Bumbalough with 9 points. Mason Hardwick had 5 points. Blake Burris and Nicolas Grieser both added 2 points. The Trojans got beat by the Hamilton Southeastern Royals 71-70.
Offensively, the Trojans did exactly what we wanted we valued positions and made Hamilton Southeastern defense work every time down the floor. We knew coming into the game that our margin for error was slim to have a chance to win the basketball game. The Trojans made the extra passes and hit open jump shots. We took care of the basketball for 28 minutes, but the last 4 minutes when they got us all sped up was the difference in the game. Luke Bumbalough did his thing on the offensive end and the Royals could not guard him. Mason Hardwick stepped up and hit some big shots for the Trojans. Defensively, the Trojans made HSE work and hit contested shots all game long. The Trojans made the Royals big man work his tail off all night long. The Trojans played great on the defensive end for 28 minutes, but struggled to get stops the last 4 minutes. The Trojans played extremely hard and learned a lot from last night’s game. This game will benefit us down the road when we play in tight games.

The New Castle Trojans are 9-7 this season. The New Castle Trojans will be back in action Friday, February 8 at Delta High School to play the Delta Eagles. The Varsity game will tip at approximately 7:30pm. Go Trojans!!!
