New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team lost another tough hard fought basketball game against the Delta Eagles 61 to 55. The Trojans got off to a good start on the offensive end of the floor, but let the Eagles get going early on the offensive end. The Trojans were moving the basketball and knocking down shots in the first quarter. In the first neither team played much defense as it was back and forth the entire quarter. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough 15 points. Nicolas Grieser added 6 points. The Trojans trailed the Delta Eagles 19 to 17 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter the Trojans continued to hit open jump shots and was clicking the entire first half. The Trojans took care of the basketball, which led to opportunities to score every time down the floor. On the defensive end the Trojans locked in and made it hard for the Eagles to do what they wanted. Nicolas Grieser added 4 points and Mason Hardwick had 3 points. The Trojans had the lead at the half over the Delta Eagles 35 to 25.
At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments offensively and defensively. Offensively, the Trojans talked about how we wanted to attack the zone the Eagles was running. Defensively, the Trojans wanted to do a better job of blocking out and finishing every defensive possession with a rebound. On the offensive end, the Trojans executed the adjustments and continued to hit shots and share the basketball. On the defensive end, the Trojans continued to struggle to keep the Eagles off of the glass. The Trojans scored the basketball, but we could never get stops so we just traded baskets. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Mason Hardwick with 8 points. Luke Bumbalough added 5 points and Nicolas Grieser had 2 points. After the third quarter the Trojans had the lead over the Eagles 50 to 40.
In the fourth quarter, the Trojans went ice cold from the field. The Trojans could not buy a basket in the fourth quarter. The Trojans let not being able to score the basketball affect their defense. We let the Eagles get any shot they wanted, and we got killed on the offensive glass, which led to easy baskets for the Eagles. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring in by Luke Bumbalough with 3 points. Nicolas Grieser added 2 points. The Trojans got beat by the Delta Eagles 61-55.
Offensively, the Trojans did exactly what we planned on doing coming into the basketball game. We took what the Eagles defense gave us and we new that guys would have to step up and hit shots. We also took care of the basketball and that is always a key in every single game we play. The Trojans were clicking on all cylinders for 3 quarters, and then in the 4th quarter the Trojans could not hit a shot. We got great looks but could not get them to fall. Luke Bumbalough led the way on the offensive end by hitting tough shots and making the extra pass. Mason Hardwick and Nicolas Grieser both stepped up and made plays for the Trojans. Defensively, the Trojans have some things we need to improve on. The biggest thing is controlling the glass. We have to to a better job of rebounding as a unit. All 5 guys have to rebound on the defensive end. The Trojans did a good job of not getting driven around and making the Eagles shoot contested jump shots the majority of the night. The atmosphere at Delta High School was phenomenal. It was a packed house and both teams brought a great crowd.
The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 34 points. Mason Hardwick added 11 points. Nicolas Grieser had 10 points.
