New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team lost a tough game to a solid Mt. Vernon Marauders team 75 to 69. The Trojans got off to a slow start on the offensive end and could not defend without fouling on the defensive end. The Trojans were led in scoring by Nicolas Grieser with 4 points. Luke Bumbalough and Mason Hardwick each had 3 points. The Trojans were trailing the Mt. Vernon Marauders 15 to 10 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter the Trojans picked up the pressure on defense and forced Mt. Vernon into turning the ball over which led to easy baskets for the Trojans. The Trojans also made Mt. Vernon shoot contested shots and rebounded the ball which led to transition opportunities for the Trojans. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 9 points. Nicolas Grieser and Blake Burris each had 2 points. The Trojans still trailed at half against the Mt. Vernon Marauders 25 to 23.

At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments offensively and defensively. Offensively, the Trojans wanted to value their positions and get easy looks. Defensively, the Trojans wanted to contain the basketball and not give up lane drives so easy. We also wanted to do a better job of clearing out space and blocking out and rebounding. The Trojans did a better job on the offensive end, but only had one guy that could hit a shot all night long. On the defensive end, the Trojans continued to struggle to keep the ball in front of us which led to free throws or easy lay-up opportunities for the Marauders. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 11 points. After the third quarter, the Trojans trailed the Marauders 47-34.

In the fourth quarter, the Trojans’ offense continued to struggle, but Luke Bumbalough did all he could to rally his team back in the game. The Trojans still was getting lane driven on the defensive end and Mt. Vernon shot 17 free throws in the fourth quarter and only missed two. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring in by Luke Bumbalough with 28 points. Cole Mcdaniel had 3 points. Blake Burris and Nicolas Grieser both added 2 points. The Trojans got beat by the Mt. Vernon Marauders 75-69.

Offensively, the Trojans could not get anything going on the offensive end. The only player on the Trojans that could do anything all night was Luke Bumbalough. He did all he could to rally his team back in the game. The Trojans could not hit a shot and struggled from the free throw line. Defensively, the Trojans could not contain the basketball all night and Mt. Vernon shot 38 free throws the entire night and hit 32 of them. The Trojans also gave up to many second and third chances to the Marauders.

The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 51 points. Nicolas Grieser had 8 points. Blake Burris had 4 points. Mason Hardwick and Cole McDaniel both added 3 points.

The New Castle Trojans are 3-5 this season. The New Castle Trojans will be back in action Friday, January 4 at Richmond High School to play the Richmond Red Devils. The Varsity game will tip at approximately 7:30pm. Go Trojans!!!
