New Castle JV Boys Basketball Team lost their fifth game of the season against a very talented and physical Hamilton Southeastern Royals basketball team 64 to 51. The Trojans got off to great start on the offensive end of the floor. The Trojans moved the basketball and did not let the HSE pressure affect them. On the defensive end the Trojans had a hard time matching the Royals physicality and let them drive right by us anytime they wanted for easy baskets. The Trojans were led in scoring the first quarter by Trey Miller with 6 points. Michael Holmes and Dillon Bergum both added 3 points. Deven Fielden had 2 points. The Trojans led after the first quarter over the Royals 14 to 8.
The second quarter the Trojans started to make careless mistakes on the offensive end and turned the basketball over which led to easy opportunities for the Royals in transition. On the defensive end the Trojans could not get a stop. We let the Royals dominate us on the glass and we could not afford to give them second and third chance opportunities. The Trojans were led in scoring by Trey Miller with 8 points. Isaac French added 4 points. The Trojans were trailing the Royals of Hamilton Southeastern at the half 32 to 26.
At the half, the Trojans made multiple defensive and offensive adjustments. On the offensive end we had to take care of the ball and not let the Royals ball pressure speed us up. We also had to set better screens on the basketball and off the ball. Defensively, we were going to know our assignments. Who we had to defend and who we did not have to defend past 15 feet. The Trojans were hoping that would stop all the lane drives and easy baskets. The Trojans also wanted to make sure all five guys were blocking out and rebounding the basketball. We also talked about getting back in transition and stopping the basketball. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Trey Miller and Deven Fielden both had 5 points apiece. Dillon Bergum and Derek Tabor both added 3 points apiece. After the third quarter the Trojans were trailing the Royals of 46 to 42.
To start the fourth quarter the Trojans continued to have trouble taking care of the basketball and let the Royals pressure cause us to turn the ball over multiple times. When we did take care of the ball we got any shot we wanted and converted on a lot of them. On the defensive end the Trojans continued to get beat in transition and kept giving up offensive rebounds put back for two easy points. The Trojans were led in scoring by Trey Miller and Isaac French both with 3 points. Derek tabor had 3 points. Deven Fielden added 1 point. The Trojans got beat by the Hamilton Southeastern Royals with a final score of 64 to 51.
Offensively, the Trojans struggled taking care of the basketball against the Royals. The Trojans let the Royals ball pressure speed us up and play at a pace we could not play at with them. When we took care of the basketball we got great shots and knocked them down. Defensively, the Trojans had a hard time guarding the basketball all night. We could not keep the basketball in front of us and got lane driven to death. When the Trojans would get a stop we would give them second and third chances by giving up offensive rebounds. The Trojans have work to do before Friday night’s matchup with the Delta Eagles, but we are confident we can fix these issues and be ready to roll.
The Trojans were led in scoring by Trey Miller with 22 points. Deven Fielden added 8 points and Isaac French had 7 points. Dillon Bergum had 6 points and Derek Tabor added 5 points. Michael Holmes had 3 points.
