New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team beat a very talented Mississinewa Indians basketball team 76 to 62. The Trojans got off to a really good start on the offensive end of the floor. The Trojans got off to a hot start shooting the basketball. The Trojans did a nice job of making the extra passes and getting the ball to the open guy. On defense, the Trojans started out the game sloppy, but we really locked in the last 3 minutes of the first quarter and did not let the Indians score. The Trojans were led in scoring by Blake Burris and Mason Hardwick both with 5 points. Luke Bumbalough and Nicolas Grieser both added 4 points apiece. Brandon Matney had 1 point. The Trojans were leading the Mississinewa Indians after the first quarter 19 to 9.
The second quarter the Trojans cooled off shooting the basketball from the outside. Luke Bumbalough found his shooting stroke and was able to get hot and kept the Trojans with a healthy lead going into half. The Trojans continued to play extremely hard on defense making the Indians work hard for any shot attempt they got. The Trojans also did a nice job of not giving the bigger Indians team any second chance opportunities. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 9 points. Blake Burris added 2 points. The Trojans had the lead at the half over Mississinewa 30 to 23.
At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments on both ends of the floor. Offensively, the Trojans wanted to attack the miss matches we had when we came off of screens. Since Mississinewa switched all screens we wanted to make sure we took advantage of all the switches. The Trojans executed this in the second half and was able to put the Indians in difficult situations. Defensively, the Trojans wanted to do a better job of helping when we got lane drived. The Trojans did a nice job in the second half of guarding the basketball and finishing each play with a rebound. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Mason Hardwick with 12 points. Luke Bumbalough had 10 points. Nicolas Grieser added 5 points. After the third quarter the Trojans had the lead over the Indians 57 to 44.
The fourth quarter the Trojans continued to do a really nice job of moving the basketball and taking care of it throughout the basketball game. The Trojans also did a good job of knocking down there free throws late in the game. On defense, the Trojans started to get a little relaxed and let Mississinewa get going and get easy baskets at the rim. We continued to score on offense so the Indians never could cut the lead and get back in the basketball game. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring in by Luke Bumbalough with 8 points. Blake Burris added 4 points. Nicolas Grieser, Mason Hardwick, and Cole McDaniel all had 2 points apiece. Jackson Clapp added 1 point. The Trojans beat the Mississinewa Indians 76 to 62.
Offensively, the Trojans did a great job of pushing the basketball in transition and finding the open guy for a great shots. The Trojans did a great job of taking care of the basketball. The Trojans made the Mississinewa defense work every single time down the floor. Luke Bumbalough led the way for the Trojans on the offensive end. Mason Hardwick hit some big shots to start the third quarter that extended the lead for the Trojans. Nicolas Grieser and Blake Burris did a nice job of finding the gaps in the Indians defense and led to layups or easy baskets. Defensively, the Trojans did a great job defensively the entire game. The Trojans made it hard for Mississinewa to get in their offense and do what they wanted. The Trojans made the Indians shoot contested jump shots and held them to one shot every position down the floor. The Trojans played great team defense.
The Trojans led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 31 points. Mason Hardwick added 19 points. Blake Burris and Nicolas Grieser both had 11 points apiece. Cole McDaniel added 2 points. Jackson Clapp and Brandon Matney both had 1 point.
The Trojans are 12-9 on the season. The New Castle Trojans will be back in action Friday, February 22 against the Muncie Central Bearcats at the New Castle Fieldhouse. The Varsity game will tip at approximately 7:30pm. Go Trojans!!!
