New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team beat a very big a physical Lapel Bulldogs ball club 75 to 51. The Trojans got off to a great start on the offensive end of the floor. Luke Bumbalough did what he has done all season and dominated the entire game. Lapel did not have an answer for Bumbalough all night. On defense, the Trojans took Lapel out of what they wanted to do all night. Lapel had the size advantage but was unable to use it to their advantage. The Trojans had good ball pressure and made Lapel do things they did not want to do. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 19 points. Nicholas Grieser added 2 points. The Trojans had the lead over the Bulldogs after the first quarter 21 to 14.
The second quarter the Trojans continued to knock down open shots and get whatever they wanted every time down the floor. Bumbalough continued to dominate hitting shots and then when they tried to trap him he hit the open man for wide open shots. The Trojans continued to play extremely hard on defense making the Bulldogs work hard for any shot attempt they took. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 9 points. Mason Hardwick added 7 points. Brandon Matney had 2 points. The Trojans were leading at the half over the Lapel Bulldogs 39 to 29.
At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Offensively, the Trojans wanted to continue to push the basketball in transition and continue to make the extra pass for great looks at the basket. The one thing we wanted to do was get Lapels big man out of the paint by making him guard ball screens. Defensively, the Trojans wanted to pick up the ball pressure and be locked in as a unit of the defensive end of the floor. We wanted to continue to make Lapel’s big men work for everything and make it hard for them to get going. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 10 points. Mason Hardwick added 6 points. After the third quarter the Trojans had the lead over the Bulldogs 55 to 33.
The fourth quarter the Trojans were able to extend the lead and got all the substitutes in the game. The Trojans continued to play offensively and we executed each possession. On defense, the Trojans continued to work and made Lapel work hard to get anything going. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring in by William Grieser with 6 points. Luke Bumbalough, Blake Burris, Mason Hardwick, Nicolas Grieser, Cole McDaniel, Collin Blessinger, and Nolan Beam all had 2 points apiece in the fourth. The Trojans beat the Lapel Bulldogs 75 to 51.
Offensively, the Trojans did a great job of pushing the basketball in transition and finding the open guy for a great shot. The Trojans did a great job of taking care of the basketball. Luke Bumbalough was feeling it all night. He was hitting tough shots and then when Lapel started trapping him he was finding the open guy for great looks at the basket. Mason Hardwick continued his sharp shooting from the perimeter. Defensively, the Trojans did a great job defensively the entire game. The Trojans made it hard for Lapel to get in their offense and do what they wanted. The Trojans ball pressure forced Lapel to take bad shots and turn the ball over. The Trojans did a great job of dominating the glass. Brandon Matney and Collin Blessinger both played really hard and did a great job defending Lapel’s big men all night.
The Trojans led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 40 points. Mason Hardwick added 15 points. William Grieser had 6 points. Nicholas Grieser added 4 points. Blake Burris, Cole McDaniel, Brandon Matney, Collin Blessinger, and Nolan Beam all had 2 points.
The Trojans are 8-5 on the season. The New Castle Trojans will be back in action Saturday, January 26 against the Carmel Greyhounds at the New Castle Field House. The Varsity game will tip at approximately 7:30pm. Go Trojans!!!
