The New Castle Boys Track and Field Team opened their indoor season on Saturday, March 2, 2019 by competing in the Blue and White Relays hosted by Hamilton Southeastern High School at the Anderson University indoor facilities. Eighteen teams competed in the boys competition. No team scores are recorded for indoor state qualifier meets.

High school track and field teams have only been holding official practices for the past three weeks so many athletes are still increasing their fitness levels as they prepare for the outdoor season. The NC team has exhibited exceptional work-ethic and focus during these past few weeks of pre-season training with girls and boys training together in their specialty areas. The girls and boys have shown great team spirit encouraging each other during practices as well as during the meet.

These indoor meets are a means to gain a good baseline for a lot of the athletes. Overall the NC squad had a good meet and had a good balance of eight returning athletes combined with eight athletes that are new to the team. The team has a lot of room to grow this season and many areas we need to work to improve on some basic skills and techniques. However, as a whole overall this was a good first meet especially when observing our performances comparisons in various events to that of other conference schools at the meet.

There were several notable performances in the meet. Freshman Skyler Dickey had never competed in an indoor meet and had never competed at the 3200 meter distance. Skyler’s first performance in the 3200 meter race was impressive in that his pacing and lap times for the 16 lap indoor race were fairly consistent, which is difficult even for seasoned distance runners, and his time of 11 minutes 14 seconds was a very respectable posting for his first time racing that distance. Sophomore Jace Logston completed the 60 meter dash in 7.75 seconds, over a half second faster than the times he posted indoors last year, which is a significant drop in time for such a short distance. The NC 4 x 200 meter relay squad consisting of Logston, Layne Nicholson, Trevor Morrison, and Noah Merida had a respectable showing in the meet by placing 7th out of 18 teams. Junior Austin Morgan posted solid initial times in the 3200 meter run as well as in the 1600 meter leg of the distance medley relay (DMR). Senior Britton Adkins opened his season with a solid 400 meter split during his leg of the DMR. Also as part of the DMR, senior Ben Brock was just 6 seconds off of his personal best at the 1200 meter distance. Rounding out the competition was the 4 x 400 relay squad consisting of Logston, Nicholson, David Gwinn, and Dominic Strunk with Nicholson, Gwinn, and Strunk all posting personal best split times for the 400 meter distance.
