The New Castle girls swimming and diving team won the season opening meet over Batesville and Eastern Hancock. The Trojans were led by Lylah Hutson, Sacha Shunneson, and Elena Millikan on the night. Hutson would easily win the 200 and 500 Freestyle events, picking up where she left off last year. Shunneson and Millikan, were both able to pick up wins in their first varsity swim meet. Shunneson won the diving competition and the 100 Breaststroke. Millikan won the 100 Freestyle and placed 2nd in the 50 Freestyle. Other top finishes for the Trojans were Payton Plank with a 2nd place in the 200 IM and 3rd place in the 100 Butterfly. Madi Moffitt swam to a 2nd place finish in the 100 Backstroke. In the relays, the 200 Medley Relay team of Moffitt, Bailey Smith, Hutson, and Millikan won the event in come back fashion, as Millikan was able to catch and pass the Eastern Hancock freestyle swimmer in the last leg. The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Plank, Millikan, Shunneson, and Hutson cruised to the win in that event. The 400 Freestyle relay team of Plank, Moffitt, Kaytlin Hill, and Shunneson swam to a 3rd place finish.
The girls swam really well, as we won 7 of the 12 events, but we also won this meet by getting the 3rd, 4th, and 5th places that we haven’t gotten previously. Adding that depth will be huge for us this year going forward. We are still really young as a team, with 8 of our 9 girls being freshmen and sophomores, but the girls really get along well and work hard at practice. I am excited to see how we swim next week against Yorktown.
