The NC girls started conservatively and made up ground through the race, but fell a little short of catching Delta’s Eagles. Delta’s Niki Southerland took individual honors, breaking away from the start. Ella Garvin ran smart, staying with Delta’s second runner until the final stretch where Ella used her speed to capture second place. Lydia Harvey had her best performance, finishing fifth in the strong field. Emma Hart, Mireya Guerrero, and Sakagewea Watson made strong moves at the end, but came up just short of overtaking Delta’s fourth and fifth runners. Emily Grow battled a side stitch, but held on for twelfth place. Kaitlyn Crabtree rounded out the team’s top seven in fourteenth, one spot behind Yorktown’s number one finisher. With a fast flat course, nearly every runner ran their best time of the year. Most impressive were the drops in times by Emma, Sakagewea, Kaitlyn, Sylvie Terrell, Addie McGowan, and Lauren Watterson. Coach Dye feels the team is reaping the rewards of their hard efforts in practices the past few weeks. Their attitude displayed in such hot conditions is admirable. Hopefully, the cooler conditions next week will reward their efforts of having battled in this heat with continued improvement in the final two meets of the season. The team races the other six Conference teams Monday at Memorial park at 5:30 PM.
