On Tuesday, September 17, the New Castle Girls and Boys Cross Country Teams hosted their only home meet of the season. Because of construction in the south end of Memorial Park, the meet was hosted on the Blue River Valley High School course. For their fourth meet of the season the team was ready to test their limits a bit closer to home and a number of hometown fans were in attendance to observe firsthand what the Trojan teams had to offer. The Blue River course was very well groomed with a few rolling hills. It was a nice fall day with sunny skies and temperatures were in the low 80s with a light breeze out of the west. The meet hosted 6 other teams from the local area. Finishing times for most competitors were slightly slower than postings from previous weeks as the course consisted of more hills than other cross country courses.
Ultimately, the Trojan boys placed 3rd as a team and freshman Lydia Harvey won the girls race in commanding fashion.
The Trojan boys’ team had a solid showing in the field of 58 runners by placing 3rd out of 7 teams (5 teams scoring) and placing three athletes in the top 15. Sophomore Andrew Fewell got off to a fast start and led most of the first mile heading into the woods. A mile later when the lead pack exited the woods, Fewell was in fifth place and remained there through the finish line. Fewell’s time of 18:22.7 was good for 5th place and was just a few seconds off of his time from the previous meet. After his race Fewell commented “I have run better and the hills were a problem. But, the shade from the trees was nice.” Sophomore Skyler Dickey stayed with the tail end of the lead pack toward the beginning of the race and followed with strong second and third miles while moving up through the field. At the finishing tape, Dickey placed 6th with a time of 18:30.9.
Even though fighting to rehabilitate an injury in recent weeks, junior Ayden Humbles has proven himself as a solid number three runner for the team and Tuesday was no different. Humbles ran a smart and solid race placing 13th with a time of 19:17.3. Junior Quentin Hedges was back in action after sitting out the previous meet because of pain in his right calf. Hedges started out quickly and settled in to a good pace the last two miles finishing in 25th in a time of 20:24.8. Senior Drew Nelson has been a consistent top five contributor to the team in his first high school cross country season and he continued to make his presence known this meet. Nelson ran a very strong race through to the end where he found himself in a race against four other runners in his vicinity. Nelson ran down all but one of those four competitors in the final stages of the race and finished 30th with a time of 20:56.0. Rounding out the top seven were senior Luke Carter and junior Dominic Reynolds. Carter ran 22:42.6 and Reynolds followed with 24.54.6. Other finishers were sophomore Joshua McCune and senior Will Hayes. McCune completed the course with a time of 26:61.0. Hayes was competing in his first meet of the season finished with a time of 43:05.9
Senior Ben Head and freshman Bradley Henderson did not compete as they are working to rehabilitate from nagging injuries. Sophomore Xander Bray was not able to compete due to illness. All three hope to be back in action in NC’s next meet on Saturday.
The team competes again Saturday, September 21 at 10:00am in the Yorktown Invitational held at Morrows Meadows in Yorktown.
