New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team got their twenty-seventh win and won the Regional Championship game against a very athletic and talented Marion Giants team. Getting the twenty-seventh win of the season tied the record for most wins in a season in New Castle history. The only other team to win twenty-seven games in a season was the 1932 New Castle Trojans who won a State Championship.

The Trojans got off to a tremendous start. On the defensive end the Trojans did a great job of containing the basketball against the Giants. Offensively, the Trojans did a great job of taking what the defense gave them on every possession. The Trojans were led in scoring by Mason Gillis with 12 points. Niah Williamson added 5 points. Blake Burris had 3 points. Bryce Webb added 2 points. At the end of the first quarter the Trojans were leading the Marion Giants 22 to 16.

The second quarter the Trojans came out and kept up the defensive pressure and made the Giants work for every shot opportunity they took. On the offensive side of the basketball the Trojans continued to push the basketball up the floor and got any shot we wanted. The Trojans did a nice job of driving the ball and making the extra pass for a great shot. The Trojans were led in scoring by Niah Williamson with 8 points. Luke Bumbalough added 4 points. Blake Burris, Nicolas Grieser, and Mason Gillis all had 2 points. The Trojans had the lead going into halftime over the Giants 40 to 25.

At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments offensively and defensively. Offensively, the Trojans wanted to continue to get great shots, but make them Marion defense guard us. If we do that we will get any shot we want. Defensively, the Trojans wanted to continue to contain the basketball and not get beat on lane drives. The Trojans adjusted how we were going to guard ball screens with every person on the floor. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Mason Gillis with 11 points. Luke Bumbalough added 7 points. Nicolas Grieser had 4 points. Bryce Huntley added 2 points. After the third quarter the Trojans were leading the Giants 64 to 45.

To start the fourth quarter, on offense the Trojans started to slow the game down and it almost came back to bite the Trojans. The Trojans big lead got cut to six points with three minutes to go in the fourth. The Trojans kept their composure and clinched the game with free throws. Defensively, the Trojans made it difficult for the Giants best player to get anything easy, but other players stepped up and hit big shots for them. The Trojans bend but don’t break modo came to fruition in this quarter. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring in by Luke Bumbalough with 8 points. Mason Gillis added 5 points. The Trojans beat the Marion Giants 77 to 70.

Offensively, the Trojans did a great job at just taking what the Marion Giants defense gave them. If the Trojans had the opportunity to push the ball up the floor that is what they did. If the Trojans needed to slow it down that is what they did. The Trojans did a fantastic job at taking care of the basketball when the pressure picked up. Luke Bumbalough did a great job of leading the team and taking care of the basketball when the Giants picked up the pressure. Black Burris and Nicolas Grieser both hit big shots in critical situations. Niah Williamson hit three big three pointers. Mason Gillis did what big players do. He dominated the glass and just knocked down big shot after big shot. The Marion defense could not stop him all night. Defensively, the Trojans did a awesome job at containing the basketball and not letting their guy blow by them for a lay up. They made Marion shoot contested shots all night long. The Trojans did a great job at rebounding only giving up three offensive boards for the entire game and the Giants averaged 13 a game. Mason Gillis did what he always does with a double double having 12 rebounds on the night. Nicolas Grieser played a phenomenal game guarding Marion’s best player the entire game. Nicolas made him shoot contested shots and fall away jumpers all night. Nicolas had 5 blocks and 4 steals on the night. The last play of the game Nicolas knocked the ball away from the Marion player and laid out for it and got the steal to seal the game.

The Trojans led in scoring by Mason Gillis with 30 points. Luke Bumbalough had 19 points. Niah Williamson added 13 points. Nicolas Grieser had 6 points. Blake Burris contributed 5 points. Bryce Huntley and Bryce Webb both had 2 points.
