New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team got their second win of the season on the road against a talented Hamilton Heights Huskies basketball team 72 to 63. The Trojans got off to a good start. In the first quarter, the Trojans made it hard for the Huskies to get into their offense and contested every shot and rebounded the basketball. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 6 points. Mason Gillis added 3 points. Bryce Webb and Nicolas Grieser both added 2 points. At the end of the first quarter the Trojans led the Huskies 13 to 5.
The second quarter Hamilton Heights settled down and knocked down a few shots, but the Trojans stayed focused and kept the Huskies one and down when the Huskies were on offense. In the second quarter, the Trojans were led by Luke Bumbalough who could not be contained by the Husky defense. Luke had 10 points in the second quarter. Mason Gillis continued to attack the basket and the Huskies had no answer for him. Mason had 6 points. Niah Williamson and Bryce Webb both added 2 points. At the end of the second quarter the Trojans led the Vikings 33 to 26.
At the half, the Trojans made a few minor defensive and offensive adjustments. The Trojans continued to push the basketball in transition, and on defense the Trojans mixed it up a little causing the Huskies to panic and force tough contested jump shots. In the third quarter the Trojans led in scoring by Mason Gillis with 10 points. Blake Burris added a big time 3 pointer from an assist from Luke Bumbalough. Luke also added 3 points. Nicolas Grieser was an animal on the glass and had a nice rebound put-back for 2 points. After the third quarter the Trojans led over the Vikings 51 to 45.
To start the fourth quarter the Trojans kept playing hard and sharing the basketball. The Trojans in the fourth quarter led in scoring in by Luke Bumbalough with 9 points. Mason Gillis had 5 points and Niah Williamson added 4 points off of layups. Mason Hardwick hit a crucial three pointer in the fourth quarter that extended our lead when the Huskies were making a little run. To end the third quarter Grieser drove baseline and hit Gillis for a monster dunk and got fouled. Gillis hit the free throw to swing the momentum back to the Trojans. The Trojans beat the Huskies with a final score of 72 to 63.
Offensively, the Trojans did a fantastic job at handling Hamilton Heights full court pressure man-to-man defense. The Huskies tried to double team Bumbalough to get the basketball out of his hands, but we had other guys step up and handle the basketball. The Trojans pushed the basketball and found the open guy for shots. The Trojans also did a great job on the boards Mason Gillis and Nicolas Grieser were phenomenal on the offensive and defensive glass. The Trojans were great from the free throw line against Hamilton Heights. As a team the Trojans were 31 of 35 from the charity stripe. Defensively, the Trojans played solid pack line defense and contested the shots of shooters from Hamilton Heights. Hamilton Heights had a few guys get hot and hit shots; so we adjusted and forced them to become drivers. The Trojans held the Huskies to one and down almost every possession when the Huskies had the ball.
The Trojans led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 28 points. Next, Mason Gillis followed with 24 points. Niah Williamson added six points. Bryce Webb and Nicolas Grieser contributed four points. Blake Burris and Mason Hardwick both hit two big time three pointers to add three points.
The Trojans will be in action again tonight December 2 at the New Castle Fieldhouse against the Anderson Indians. The Varsity tip is at approximately 7:30 p.m. Go Trojans!!!
