New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team got their twenty-fifth win and cut down the nets winning the Sectional Championship. The Trojans won the Championship in dominating fashion beating a very talented Delta Eagle team.

The Trojans got off to a quick start and never looked back. On the defensive end the Trojans did a really good job of protecting the paint and not letting the Eagles get anything easy. Offensively, the Trojans made the Eagles work hard and got any shot we wanted. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 6 points. Mason Gillis added 4 points. Niah Williamson and Nicolas Grieser both had 3 points. At the end of the first quarter the Trojans were leading the Delta Eagles 16 to 6.

The second quarter the Trojans came out and had great ball pressure to start the second quarter and caused the Eagles to turn the ball over or shoot a tough shot. Offensively, the Trojans pushed the basketball up the floor and did not let the Eagles junk defense get set. The Eagles played man on three players and one one zone to protect the paint. The Trojans were led in scoring by Mason Gillis and Niah Williamson both with 6 points. The Trojans had the lead going into halftime over the Eagles 28 to 18.

At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments offensively and defensively. Offensively, the Trojans wanted to make the Eagles defense work and get a great shot every possession. Defensively, the Trojans made a few adjustments on how we were guarding a few of the Delta players. The Trojans wanted to get off to a quick start to start the half. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 7 points. Niah Williamson had 6 points. Mason Gillis added 4 points. Bryce Webb contributed 3 points. After the third quarter the Trojans were leading the Eagles 48 to 24.

To start the fourth quarter, the Trojans had the opportunity to get every player in the game and they did not skip a beat. On offense the Trojans continued to make the extra pass and knock down shots. Defensively, the Trojans made it difficult for the Eagles to get anything easy and dominated the glass. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring in by Luke Bumbalough with 5 points. Bryce Huntley, Blake Burris, and Matt Dickerson all had 3 points apiece. Niah Williamson, Mason Gillis, and Nolan Beam all added 2 points. The Trojans beat the Delta Eagles 68 to 45.

Offensively, the Trojans did a great job of pushing the basketball in transition and taking what Delta Eagles gave us. The Trojans made the extra pass and we knocked down shots. The Trojans knocked down 12 three pointers in the game and attempted 19. That made the Trojans 63% from downtown. The Trojans for the entire game from the field shot 54% as a team. If they shoot that high percentage they will be hard to beat. Niah Williamson knocked down 5 three pointers on the night. Luke Bumbalough had 6 assist on the night. Bryce Webb had a big offensive rebound put back for a and one play. Defensively, the Trojans had good ball pressure and caused the Eagles to have double digit turnovers. The Trojans dominated the glass and only allowed one offensive rebound to the Eagles. When you rebound that well the Trojans will be hard to beat. Mason Gillis led the way with 12 rebounds. Nicolas Grieser did a great job defending Delta’s best player.

The Trojans led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 18 points. Niah Williamson followed with 17 points. Mason Gillis added 16 points. Bryce Huntley, Blake Burris, Nicolas Grieser, Bryce Webb, Matt Dickerson all had 3 points. Nolan Beam added 2 points.

The 25-2 Trojans will play in the Regional Semi-Final on Saturday, March 10 at Marion High School against the Angola Hornets. The game will start at approximately 12 p.m. Go Trojans!!!
