New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team got there eighteenth win of the season on Thursday against a very good Eagles team from Delta. Delta was 15-5 coming into the game. The Trojans improved to 6-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference (HHC) and are the only team that has not lost a game in conference this season.
The Trojans got off to a great start and did not give the Delta Eagles any chance from the beginning. The Trojans brought it on the defensive end with ball pressure and rebounding the basketball. Offensively, the Trojans got points in transition and off turnovers. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough and Mason Gillis with 7 points apiece. Niah Williamson had 3 points. Nicolas Grieser and Bryce Webb both had 2 points. At the end of the first quarter the Trojans led the Eagles 21 to 6.
The second quarter the Trojans made the Eagles work for every shot they took. Offensively, the Trojans pushed the basketball up the floor and got whatever shot they wanted. The Trojans were led in scoring by Mason Gillis with 12 points. Luke Bumbalough added 4 points. The Trojans had the lead going into halftime over the Eagles 37 to 19.
At the half, the Trojans made a few minor defensive and offensive adjustments. The Trojans wanted to do a better job moving the basketball and making the Delta defense work. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Mason Gillis who had 8 points. Luke Bumbalough had 4 points. Niah Williamson added 3 points. Nicolas Grieser had 1 point. After the third quarter the Trojans led over the Eagles 53 to 29.
To start the fourth quarter, the Trojans kind of got relaxed on the defensive side of the basketball and we know we cannot let this happen. The Trojans did have the opportunity to get every player in the basketball game against the Eagles. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring in by Luke Bumbalough with 5 points. Blake Burris had 3 points. Wes Chamberlin and Mason Gillis each had 2 points apiece. The Trojans beat the Eagles of Delta 65 to 46.
Offensively, the Trojans did a great job of pushing the basketball in transition and just took what Delta defense gave us. When the Trojans moved the basketball we got any shot we wanted throughout the game. Luke Bumbalough got to the rim anytime he wanted to and the Eagles did not have a answer for him. Mason Gillis passed the 1,000 career points mark against the Eagles. That is a great testament to his hard work he has put in through the years. To reach that as a Junior is quite a accomplishment. Defensively, the Trojans had great ball pressure and made it hard for Delta to get open looks. The Trojans were led defensively by Nicolas Grieser who were responsible for defending the Eagles best player the entire game. We knew that the Eagles were going to try to slow the game down so we had to force the Eagles into some turnovers so we could get out and run. In the first half our defense led to our offense.
The Trojans led in scoring by Mason Gillis with 29 points. Next, Luke Bumbalough followed with 20 points. Niah Williamson had 6 points. Nicolas Grieser and Blake Burris both had 3 points. Wes Chamberlin and Bryce Webb both added 2 points.
The 18-2 Trojans will be in action again Tuesday, February 13 at Pendleton Heights High School to face the Pendleton Heights Arabians. The Varsity tip is at approximately 7:30 p.m. Go Trojans!!!
