New Castle Varsity Boys Basketball Team got their twenty-sixth win and advanced to the Regional Championship Game. The Trojans won the Semi-Final game in convincing fashion against a very savvy Angola Hornets team.

The Trojans got off to a good start. On the defensive end the Trojans did a really great job and making the Hornets run their offense and contested every shot they took. Offensively, the Trojans started out slow but it was hard to get anything going against a good defensive team like the Hornets. The Trojans were led in scoring by Mason Gillis with 6 points. Luke Bumbalough added 3 points. At the end of the first quarter the Trojans were leading the Angola Hornets 9 to 5.

The second quarter the Trojans came out and kept up the defensive ball pressure and forced the Hornets to turn the ball over multiple times. On the offensive side of the basketball the Trojans continued to get anything going. The Trojans just could not get the game at a pace we wanted to get it at. The Trojans were led in scoring by Luke Bumbalough with 5 points. Niah Williamson and Mason Gillis each scored 2 points. The Trojans had the lead going into halftime over the Hornets 18 to 15.

At the half, the Trojans made a few adjustments offensively and defensively. Offensively, the Trojans wanted to get out in transition and make Angola guard us when we were going downhill. Defensively, the Trojans wanted to start trapping the ball screens the Hornets set because the Hornets set a ton of them. The Trojans wanted to get off to a quick start to start the half. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Mason Gillis with 15 points. Luke Bumbalough added 2 points. After the third quarter the Trojans were leading the Hornets 35 to 27.

To start the fourth quarter, on offense the Trojans continued to push the basketball up the floor and the Trojans made the extra pass and knock down shots. Defensively, the Trojans made it difficult for the Hornets to get anything easy and dominated the glass. The Trojans in the fourth quarter were led in scoring in by Luke Bumbalough and Niah Williamson with 5 points apiece. Mason Gillis added 4 points. The Trojans beat the Angola Hornets 49 to 35.

Offensively, the Trojans did a good job at not getting flustered on the offensive end with a very sold Angola defense. Angola plays great defense and made it hard for the Trojans to get out in transition and run. In the second half the Trojans got the Hornets sped up and made them turn the basketball over which led to fast break opportunities for the Trojans. Only three players scored for the Trojans in the game. Luke Bumbalough did a nice job at attacking the rim and putting pressure on the Hornets. Niah Williamson had his hands and feet ready and knocked down open shots. Defensively, the Trojans had good ball pressure and caused the Hornets to have double-digit turnovers. The Trojans dominated the glass on both sides. When the Trojans started trapping the ball screens it really got to the Hornets. Mason Gillis led the way with 10 rebounds and 8 block shots. Bryce Webb did a great job on guarding the Hornets other post player and rebounding the basketball.

The Trojans led in scoring by Mason Gillis with 27 points. Luke Bumbalough had 15 points. Niah Williamson added 7 points.

The 26-2 Trojans will play in the Regional Finals on Saturday, March 10 at Marion High School against the Marion Giants. The game will start at 8 p.m. Go Trojans!!!
