Where were you in 1978 and 1979? That was the last time New Castle had back to back winning seasons football…until now. NC went on the road and closed out their regular season with a 28-0 win at Greenfield, giving this team a 5-4 regular season record. It was a wet, cold, rainy night and the Trojans came to play.

GC received the kick and went 3 and out. NC ran the ball early with Luke Bumbalough and Gage Burk. Bumbalough went for 28 yards, Burk 11 yards, and Bumbalough finished the drive with a 1 yard TD. Skylor Stevenson hit the PAT and NC led 7-0. After another GC punt, Bumbalough ran for 15 yards, and then Drew Barber hit Triston Chesher for a 34 yard TD pass. Stevenson was good, and it was 14-0 at the end of one.

The second quarter saw GC gain little yardage until their last drive. A tipped pass set up GC on the Trojan 20 with 55 seconds left. Trenton Williams then took matters into his own hands and sacked GC’s qb for a big 14 yard loss. Williams and Brayden Miller then pressured the qb, causing him to throw the ball that was intercepted by Chandler Marcum. The half ended with NC up 14-0.

NC couldn’t get points on the board, missing a fg in the 3rd quarter, but the Trojan D stifled GC and they couldn’t move it at all. The 3rd quarter ended with it still being 14-0.

At the start of the 4th, NC turned the ball over on downs, but on the next play, Mason Hardwick picked off a pass, setting the Trojans up. NC finally cashed in as Chesher caught a pass, broke 2 tackles, spun outside and broke another tackle as he ran into the end zone for a 29 yard TD reception. Stevenson’s PAT was good and it was 21-0. GC then tried to pass it but Trenton Williams had a strip sack fumble recovery, a la Dwight Freeney from back in the day. William Grieser came in and hit Chesher for a 32 yard pass down to the 2, but NC couldn’t punch it in. GC took over and punted. NC moved the ball and on 4th down William Grieser hit his brother Nicholas for a 15 yard TD. Stevenson’s PAT was good and it was 28-0. Nicholas Grieser intercepted the last pass of the game and NC came home with a win.

Offensively, Barber was 10-18 for 147 yards, 2 TDs and an Int. William Grieser was 3-4 for 51 yards and a TD. Chesher was huge, catching 9 passes for 149 yards and 2 TDs. Nicholas Grieser had 2 catches for 34 yards and a TD. Bumbalough, Tytus Ragle, and Dakota Durick all had a catch. Gage Burk ran hard and had 16 carries for 78 yards. Bumbalough had 8 carries for 67 yards in the first half.

Defensively, there were stars aplenty. Stephen Spears had 12 tackles, Dylan Beck 9, D Ray Ford 9, including 2 for loss. Trenton Williams had 8 tackles, 3 for loss including 2 sacks, 1 of which he sacked, stripped and recovered the fumble. Brayden Miller also had 8 tackles, 3 for loss and 2 sacks. Nicholas Grieser had 8 tackles and an Interception. Mason Hardwick and Chandler Marcum also had interceptions. Our defensive line dominated GC.

NC starts sectional play next Friday night at Neal Field at 7 pm against Greenwood. Note that sectional games start at 7, not 7:30. The boys will be ready to go, will you? Get loud and crazy and support this special Group of Trojans. It had been almost 40 years since we had back to back winning seasons. These boys just did it. Come see them at home next Friday.
