New Castle’s boys of fall started out 2018 on the right foot, dismantling an undermanned Franklin County team 42-12. NC kicked off and on the 3rd play, the defense rose to the occasion, doing the tip drill to perfection as Nicholas Grieser tipped the pass and Gavin Ridge secured the interception, giving us the ball on FC’s 29 yard line. Gage Burk ran it 13 yards in the first play and on 3rd and 7, Grieser took a short pass from QB Drew Barber and bowled over 3 FC players in gaining 8 yards and the first down. In a sign of things to come, Barber hit Luke Bumablough for the TD and Skylor Stevenson added the PAT for 7-0 Trojan lead. After a FC punt, Junior RB Dakota Durick took a hand off, juked through the hole, shook off a would be tackler, and then out ran everyone for a 73 yard TD. Stevenson added the PAT and it was 14-0. After another FC punt, Barber hit Bumbalough for a 27 yard TD and Stevenson yet again hit to make it 21-0. At the end of 1 it was 21-6.
In the second quarter, the defense stood up again as on 4th down, Dylan Wolfe hit FC’s punter, causing a fumble that Dylan Beck ran in for a TD and Stevenson hit again out of a great hold by Grieser as the ball rolled to him to make it 28-6. FC scored on their next possession, but Barber came back and hit Bumbalough on a 54 yard TD pass that Luke just embarrassed the defenders by making them miss. Stevenson again was good and at half it was 35-12
The rain came in the 3rd quarter and NC had to punt, which turned out good for us as Burk boomed one that the FC returner fumbled. Layne Nicholson recovered and NC was in business. Burk ran it a few times before Barber found Bumbalough on a pass tipped twice before Luke grabbed it for the TD. Stevenson hit again in the downpour and it was 42-12. NC ran the ball the rest of the game and the defense made plays to secure the victory.
Offensively for NC, Barber was 9-19 for 190 yards and 4 TDs. Bumbalough had 5 catches for 108 yards and 4 TDs. Triston Chesher had 2 catches for 68 yards including a great 56 yarder, Grieser had 1 for 8, and Tytus Ragle 1 for 6. Gage Burk was the workhorse, toting the rock 15 times for 70 yards. Dakota Durick ran it 4 times for 83 yards and a TD, Stephen Spears ran 5 times for 57 yards, even hurdling a player on a 21 yard scamper.
Defensively, the Trojans were flying around and making plays, accumulating 8 tackles for loss. This D is pretty good and athletic. Grieser had 8 tackles, Spears and Trenton Miller had 7 and Mason Hardwick had 6. The D line of Wolfe, Brayden Miller, Trevor Raynor, and D Ray Ford dominated up front, as these 4 were constantly in the backfield. Beck, Spears and Derek Amonett played the linebacker role well, Chandler Marcum, Ridge, Cole McDaniel (1 int), Hardwick, and Grieser took care of the back end of our no fly zone. A great performance by all the boys who played.
NC is back in action for the home opener next Friday at 7:30 @ Neal Field. The fireworks will be going off, the cannon will be fired, and the victory bell will be rung as the Trojans take on Rushville. Come out and see these boys play.
