New Castle JV Boys Basketball Team got a great win on Tuesday against the Mississinewa Indians. The Trojans beat Mississinewa 51 to 45. The Trojans got to a slow start letting the Indians get a big lead at the end of the first quarter 15 to 9. The Trojans struggled to keep the bigs off the boards and we let the guards have way to many lane drives. The Trojans were led in scoring by William Grieser with 5 points. Michael Holmes and Collin Blessinger both added 2 points.
The second quarter the Trojans came out and got their offense going, and picked up the ball pressure on defense. The Trojans also mixed it up defensively between zone and man. Offensively, the Trojans pushed the ball up the floor executed its sets and got wide open looks. The Trojans moved the basketball and made the extra pass which led to wide open shot attempts. Cole McDaniel led the Trojans with 7 points. William Grieser added 6 points. Michael Holmes contributed 3 points. Brandon Matney added 1 point. At the end of the second quarter the Trojans were leading the Indians 26 to 24.
At the half, the Trojans made defensive and offensive adjustments. On the offensive end we wanted to get the basketball moving because every time we made Mississinewa defend for a long period of time we got a wide open shot. Defensively, we wanted to continue to mix it up and trap a little more to cause the Indians to turn the ball over. In the third quarter the Trojans were led in scoring by Cole McDaniel, Logan Hinton, and Michael Holmes all had 3 points apiece. Collin Blessinger had 2 points. After the third quarter the Trojans led over the Indians 37 to 33.
To start the fourth quarter the Trojans did a really nice job of moving the basketball and not forcing any shots. The Trojans took care of the basketball and that led to long possessions and easy baskets. The Trojans were led in scoring by William Grieser with 6 points. Cole McDaniel had points. Michael Holmes had 2 points. Sam Lowe added 1 point. The Trojans beat the Indians of Mississinewa with a final score of 51 to 45.
Offensively, the Trojans did a good job of running their offense and sharing the basketball the entire game. The Trojans pushed the basketball in transition which led to layups or wide open jump shots. The Trojans took care of the basketball the entire game and had very few turnovers. Defensively, the Trojans played hard and made Mississinewa work for every shot. The Trojans played a 2-3 zone, 1-3-1 zone, and man to man in the ball game. The Trojans trapped out of all those defenses trying to speed Mississinewa up and get some turnovers. We did a nice job of rebounding the basketball and limiting the Indians to one shot every possession. Collin Blessinger dominated the glass.
The Trojans were led in scoring by William Grieser with 17 points. Cole McDaniel had 15 points. Michael Holmes added 10 points. Collin Blessinger had 4 points. Logan Hinton contributed 3 points. Brandon Matney and Sam Lowe each added 1 point apiece.
The Trojans are 13-8 and will be in action again Saturday, February 24 at Ball State University at Worthen Arena to play the Muncie Central Bearcats. The JV tip is at 6:30 p.m. Go Trojans!!!
