Meet Recap

The NC Middle School girls cross country team defeated Shenandoah 23 to 33. With NC missing their number four and five team finishers from their last meet, the Trojans had other
runners deliver strong enough races to get the victory. Shenandoah’s runner pulled away early and held the lead to the finish. NC’s Lydia Harvey and Mireya Guerrero ran together and worked themselves into the runner-up spot, with Lydia finishing just two seconds ahead at the end. Lily Saunders seemed to struggle early on, but ran a strong second half to finish fourth. Shenendoah’s number two runner held off NC’s hard charging Kinadee Flynn, who ran a faster second half of the race. Shaley Davis was the team’s final scoring member in eighth place helping secure the win. Karsen Morgan helped push the opponents’ score up another point by beating the Raiders’ number five scoring member. Patience Antrim was the Trojan’s seventh placer in 13th overall.
Coach Dye cited Harvey, Antrim, and Lauren Watterson as having their best times on a grass course. He also complemented Kinadee Flynn on coming back strong after a short lay off. Rylee Thompson showed great improvement with a personal record time.
The team’s record goes to 5 and 3. The girls race Delta and Yorktown Thursday.

Game Recap

The New Castle High School boys soccer team collected a conference win away from home for the second time this season. This time their victory was over the Pendleton Heights Arabians, who they were able to defeat 3-2 in 2OT. Pendleton managed to put the first score on the board when their runner went through the box without much resistance and connect on a cross with a volley finish. The Trojans were able to answer in the 26th minute, when Jayden Centner crashed the goal after a shot by Landon Malott and was able to tuck away the rebound. After the half finished 1-1, New Castle was able to take the lead in the 52nd minute when Skylor Stevenson cleaned up a loose ball in the box following a corner kick by the Trojans. New Castle was able to maintain that 2nd half lead until the 75th minute. Continuous pressure from the Arabians finally paid off when constant ball movement allowed for an open shot on goal, which they were able to put away and force overtime. While keeping their composure throughout, New Castle was able to take the lead for good in the first portion of overtime. In the 86th minute, Carter Brown picked up the ball from Clayton Rose and was able to finish. This time around after taking the lead the Trojans were able to withstand Pendleton’s pressure by turning away each of their attacks.

Game Recap

In a game shortened to 3 quarters by lightning, NC tamed the visiting Yorktown Tigers 54-24. Yorktown started with the ball and NC forced a failed 4th down conversion. It took NC just 41 seconds to score as QB William Grieser hit Brandon Matney on a 38 yard completion, and then Grieser ran it in for the remaining 6 yards for the TD. Dylan Beck added the 2 point conversion and NC was up 8-0. YHS answered with a 66 yard TD pass but missed the conversion and it was 8-6. NC took over, moved the ball, and Grieser found Matney on a 35 yard TD pass. Grieser added the 2 point conversion and it was 16-6. YHS had to punt and fumbled the snap and Beck recovered on the YHS 23. On the next play, Beck ran 23 yards for a TD, but the 2 point was no good and NC led 22-6. YHS had to punt again, and after another bad snap, Aaron Reagan took the ball out of the defenders hands and ran into the end zone on a pass from Nic Besecker. The 2 point was no good and at the end of 1 it was 28-6.

Beck intercepted a pass and returned it for a TD on the first play of the second quarter, but a hold on the return nullified it. Besecker’s pass was then tipped and YHS returned it for a TD cutting it to 28-12. NC had to punt on the next possession and YHS scored to cut it to 28-18. NC took the ball and moved it and scored when Grieser ran it 33 yards, aided by huge blocks from Beck and Reagan. At half it was 34-18.

Starting the 3rd, NC scored on a Beck 17 yard TD reception from Besecker to go up 40-24. NC recovered the onside kick, and Grieser threw a dart to Cooper Rusch for a 40 yard TD. Max Rinberger added the 2 point conversion to make it 48-24. YHS turned it over on downs, and Grieser ran it 28 yards for his 3 rushing TD of the game to complete the scoring at 54-24.

Offensively, Grieser was 8-14 for 168 yards and 2 TDs, and ran the ball 7 times for 123 yards and 3 TDs. Beck had 6 carries for 74 yards and a TD. Besecker was 3-8 for 63 yards and 2 TDs with 1 INT. Matney had 4 catches for 115 yards and a TD, Reagan 1 for 34 and a TD, Rusch 1 for 40 and a TD, Beck 1 for 17 and a TD, Michael Buksar 1 for 16 and Drew Jackson 1 for 9.

Defensively, Beck and Landon Burge were all over the field. Beck had 5 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery, an Int, and a sack. Burge had 4 TFL, a sack, and 2 passes defended. Layne Nicholson has 3 passes defended, Matt Bell and Jace Logston also had 5 or more tackles.

NC moves to 3-1 and plays at Delta next Monday.
