Meet Recap

The NC boys cross country team place 4th of eight in the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet. The defending champions had hoped for more, but it was a meet where the competition was close for the top four spots, and the team with the strongest combined score in their third, fourth , and fifth runners prevailed. In the case of the top two individuals, the eventual winning school, Greenfield, trailed Pendleton by three points and was just two points ahead of NC. The Trojans were easily in third as Delta was 13 points behind them. However Greenfield’s next three were 6th, 15th, and 16th for just 37 points from the trio, while Pendleton, the early leader after two runners, added 53 to their score. The Trojans had 75 more points from their final three scorers while Delta tallied only 56 more. This wrapped up the scoring as Greenfield 45, Pendleton 58, Delta 79, and New Castle 85. The other four teams were well back with scores of Doe Creek 122, Mt Vernon 155, Shelbyville 167, and Yorktown 185.
While Pendleton’s A. Carpenter broke away from the field early to go on and win, the battle for second place was exciting. For over a mile Carpenter’s teammate Creel had a gap on the group behind, but Caleb Grow led a pack in chase. Three of that pack pulled just ahead of Grow and up with Creel and the sprint to the finish began. It ended with second to sixth separated by only four seconds. Caleb Grow had the best top end speed and strength to lead the charge and pull off second overall. Once again Trey Miller was keying off his teammate and had his own battle at the end, sprinting in for eighth overall.
Grow and Miller earned Conference ALL Conference status for top ten. Jonah Merida was honorable mention in 18th. Simon Miller was just a place away from the same honor in 21st. After mathematically adjusting the times for the short course, the following were determined to have run personal bests for the year: Grow, T. Miller, Merida, S. Miller, Gavin Frazier, Trighten Cummings, Bryce Jenkins, Harry Calloway, Luke Mills, Niki Greive, Sam Brewster, and Ian Bailey. Congratulations to those and others who were close to their best performance thus far.
The team’s record went to 12 and 5. They run in the largest meet of the year Wednesday at Pendleton for their final competition with other schools.

Game Recap

NC travelled to Delta Mondat night for a supposed C team game against the Eagles. Ot turned into a JV game as Delta was playing some Juniors and seniors in the game , but the young Trojans fought hard. Delta took the kickoff and scored on a long drive to make it 8-0. NC responded as QB William Grieser hit Brandon Matney on a 25 yard TD pass after a 30 yard completion to Cooper Rusch. The 2 point conversion was no good and it was 8-6 after 1.

Delta scored quickly to start the second and it was 14-6. NC had to punt and Michael Buksar hit a 50 yarder, but Delta scored again to make it 22-8. NC answered as Grieser found Rusch for a 55 yard TD pass and hit Aaron Reagan on the 2 point conversion to make it 22-14. Delta answered at the end of the half as Delta’s 6’2″ junior receiver outjumped NC’s db’s making it 30-14 @ half.

In the 3rd quarter, Nic Besecker scored from 6 yards out and added the 2 point conversion to make it 30-22 Delta. Delta then exploded, scoring 22 straight points, before Dakota Durick returned a kick 80 yards at the gun giving the final score.

Offensively for NC, Grieser completed 5-11 passes for 122 yards and 2 TDs and rushed 5 times for 23 yards. Besecker completed 6-14 passes for 53 yards and ran for the 1 TD. Matney had 7 catches for 77 yarda and a TD, and Rusch 2 for 85 and a TD. Dakota Durick had 24 yards rushing, 11 yards receiving, and 121 return yards including the TD.

Defensively, Matt Bell, Wyatt Lenz, Colin Holcomb, Landon Burge and Bailey Melton led in tackles, with Cole McDaniel intercepting a pass and D Ray Ford recovering a fumble.

It was a great effort in a game where the freshman and sophomore boys were overmatched by Delta’s older kids, but fought to the end. Proud of the way they competed. NC moves to 3-2 on the season.

Game Recap

NCMS 7th grade travelled to Connersville and ended up tied with the Spartans. NC took a 6-0 lead in the second quarter on a 35 yard TD pass from Aidan Bradley to Quinton Boatright after Brevan Thrine had intercepted a Connersville pass. The 2 point conversion failed. Connersville took the ball and marched all the way to the Trojan 6 yard line, where the Defense held the Spartans on 4 downs and at half it was 6-0.

NC stopped Connersville on the first possession of the second half when Boatright stripped the runner and recovered the fumble. NC took 2 plays to move the ball 60 yards on completions from Bradley to Hayden Bulmer for 25 yards and Bradley to Boatright for 35 yards to move it down to the Connersville 6. After 2 questionable penalties, NC was moved back to the 20 and then ended up turning it over on downs at the Connersville 4. On the next play, Connersville’s RB broke through the line and took it 96 yards for a TD. The conversion failed and it was tied. On the next possession, Bradley threw the ball to Boatright who was in position to make the catch when he was tackled by the Connersville safety well before the ball got there. No call was made and NC had to punt. Connersville’s RB broke 4 tackles and scored and the 2 point conversion was good, putting NC down 14-6 with 1:35 left. NC’s boys got the kickoff and moved the ball down the field aided by a 15 yard Jonathan Eberhart run, and a 25 yard pass from Bradley to Daniel Davis. On the next play, Bradley scampered in from 20 yards out to make it 14-12. Bradley added the 2 point conversion to tie it with 39 seconds left aided by blocking by Thrine, Bulmer, and Davis to tie it at 14. NC tried an onside kick and about had it, but Connersville recovered. The defense stood up and they couldn’t move the ball and the game ended in a tie.

Bradley completed 6 passes for 153 yards and 1 TD and ran 5 times for 37 yards and a TD. Eberhart had 2 catches and 3 runs totalling 47 all purpose yards. Boatright had 2 catches for 65 yards and a TD, and Bulmer 1 for 25, and Davis 1 for 25.

Defensively, Eberhart, AJ Sizemore, Chloe Vaughn, Michael York, Bulmer, Logan Tharp, Jalen Stiles, Boatright, Thrine, Bradley, and Davis kept Connersville stud RB at bay most of the game. Boatright had a fumble recovery and Thrine an interception

NCMS closes out their schedule Wednesday at home against Pendleton. Gametime is 5:30.

Meet Recap

The boys varsity tennis team was defeated by Shelbyville Saturday 3-2. Rylan Huntley won at #2 singles 6-4, 6-3 and Grant Guffey won at #3 singles 6-2, 6-4. Varsity record is 8-9, 2-4 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. The Junior Varsity tied 2-2. Chase Marcum and Blake McKown won at #1 doubles 8-3 and Jacob Lucas and Jackson Clapp won at #2 doubles 8-5. JV record is 4-5-3.

This was a fun day because we played a dual match with our middle school team. It was fun to have the young players with us and to watch them play. As for the varsity match, Rylan and Grant again played really well for us at singles. Rylan was playing with a slight knee injury and played really well. He was hitting all of his shots with authority and served very well. Grant played on of his best matches of the season and was making good shots to put pressure on his opponent.
