New Castle travelled to Greenfield to finish up their season and came away with a 19-6 victory. The NC defense was outstanding all night, dominating from the start. Derek Amonett recovered a fumble on the first series, but NC threw a pick, and GC took advantage, scoring on a 60 yard pass just over the outstretched arms of NC’s defender. GC missed the extra point and then recovered an onside kick. The Trojan defense stood up and on 4th down GC tried a fake punt but was stopped. NC took over and was moving when the quarter ended.
Second quarter started and NC turned it over on downs inside the GC 20 yard line. NC stopped GC and they turned it over on downs. NC threw another interception, but Jace Logston recovered another GC fumble. NC couldn’t move it and turned it over on downs. GC again was stuffed by the Trojan Defense as D Ray Ford sacked their QB on 4th down. The half ended when NC punted, the GC player touched it and NC recovered. However, the referwe changed the call and GC ran out the clock.
In the 3rd quarter, NC exploded on offense and the defense held GC without a first down. GC tried an onside kick to start the half, but it didn’t travel 10 yards, giving NC great field position. QB William Grieser hit Brandon Matney on a 41 yard TD pass but the kick was no good and the game was tied at 6. Jace Logston intercepted GC’s pass on the next series and NC took advantage. Grieser hit Aaron Reagan on a 17 yard gain on 3rd and 12, and then ran it 17 yards to the GC 10. Grieser then found Matney on a 10 yard TD pass that Matney caught 1 handed in the back of the end zone. The 2 point conversion was no good, but NC had a 12-6 lead. GC turned it over on downs and on the second play, Grieser hit Cooper Rusch on a 33 yard TD pass. Skylor Stevenson hit the extra point and NC had a 19-6 lead after 3. Grieser was 7-10 for 127 yards and 3 TDs in the quarter.
Starting the 4th, GC was moving when Matt Bell caused a fumble that Layne Nicholson recovered and returned it 67 yards to the GC 10 yard line. NC lost yardage and GC took over on NC’s 49 yard line. GC started moving again when Bell caused another fumble that Amonett picked up and returned 63 yards for a TD, but an illegal block in the back call nullified it. NC lost yardage again and turned it over on downs. GC moved the ball down to the 5 yard line, where they could not get it in on 4 downs and the game was over.
Offensively for NC, Grieser was 10-18 for 164 yards and 3 TDs with 1 int, also running 7 times for 46 yards playing the 1st and 3rd quarters. QB Nic Besecker was 5-12 for 37 yards and an int. Matney had 8 catches for 94 yards and 2 TDs. Reagan had 5 catches for 65 yards, and Rusch had 2 for 42 and a TD.
The defense was awesome as usual and there were big plays all over. Amonett, Bell, and Nicholson dominated the middle of the field. Amonett had 15 total tackles and 2 fumble recoveries; Bell had 13 tackles, 2 forced fumbles and a pass defended. Nicholson had 7 tackles and a fumble recovery. Jace Logston had a fumble recovery, an interception, 2 passes defended and 4 tackles. Cole McDaniel shut down his side of the field also as he had 2 passes defended and an interception that was wiped out by a penalty. D Ray Ford, Dylan Wolfe, Trenton Round, Bell, Amonett, and Nicholson all had tackles for loss. Landon Burge had 7 tackles and Robert Porter 2 passes defended. The defense dominated the game.
NC finishes the season at 7-2, including 6-1 in the HHC. It was a great season for the team as they did what they needed to do to win games and many different players stepped up. We are looking forward to seeing these boys on Friday nights in the near future. The future is bright.
