Game Recap

In a thrilling back and forth game, the New Castle Trojans pulled out a 29-26 over New Pal Monday night. The team moves to 5-2 on the season and travels to Greenfield next Monday to conclude the season.

New Pal received the kick and lost yardage, but on the punt, NC fumbled and New Pal recovered. The Trojan defense held again and New Pal punted. NC took over on the 29 yard line. 9 plays and 71 yards later, QB William Grieser hit Brandon Matney on an 18 yard TD pass after a 38 yard completion to Jackson Criswell. The extra point try was blocked and NC led 6-0 after 1.

New Pal scored starting the second quarter, but NC stopped them on the 2 point conversion and it was tied at 6. NC had to punt, and New Pal was driving when Derek Amonett made a leaping interception stopping the NP drive. NC had to punt again, and Michael Buksar boomed a 40 yarder that New Pal fumbled. It bounced into Aaron Reagan’s hands and he returned it 45 yards for a TD. Skylor Stevenson added the PAT out of the hold of Nic Besecker and it was 13-6 with 1:30 to play. New Pal got the kickoff and threw a 68 yard TD pass, but missed the conversion and at half it was 13-12.

NC received the kickoff to start the second half and Landon Burge returned it 81 yards for a TD with the aid of a huge block by Cooper Rusch. Grieser hit Corbin Jarvis on a shovel pass for the 2 point conversion and it was 21-12 NC. New Pal had to punt, and NC moved the ball down the field, only to have 4 holding calls throughout the drive slow the momentum. Grieser found Cooper Rusch on a 4th and 17, and hit Brandon Matney for a 30 yard TD that was called back. Eventually, NC punted and New Pal took 2 minutes to score but missed the 2 point conversion and after 3, it was 21-18 NC.

At the start of the 4th, NC fumbled and New Pal recovered and took 3 minutes to score, adding the extra point, and it was 26-21 for the first lead of the game for New Pal. NC took over and moved on a 3 minute, 60 yard drive. Grieser hit Rusch on a chair route on 3rd down that Rusch tipped, dove and made a great catch for 23 yards to keep the drive alive. Grieser then hit Brandon Matney on a stutter and go for a 28 yard TD, and Grieser added the 2 point conversion on a tough run and it was 29-26 NC. New Pal got the ball with 3 minutes left and started moving the ball when Layne Nicholson stepped in front of NP receiver and made a juggling huge interception, with 2 minutes left. NC needed 1 first down to seal the game, and on the first play, Grieser kept it and ran it for 30 yards. NC ran it twice and then took a knee and the victory was in hand.

Offensively for NC, Grieser completed 13-20 passes for 201 yards and 2 TDs, while rushing for 49 yards on 8 carries. Matney caught 6 passes for 69 yards and 2 TDs. Rusch had 3 catches for 45 yards, Reagan 3 for 41, Jackson Criswell 1 for 38, Cole McDaniel 1 for 7, and Jordan Paige 1 for 8. McDaniel also had a 23 yard run on a backwards fass from Besecker. Besecker was 2-4 for 17 yards.

Defensively, tackles for loss were aplenty, as NC had 10 on the game. Dylan Wolfe and D Ray for had 3 each, Layne Nicholson 2, Trenton Round, Bailey Melton, and Derek Amonett one each. Amonett and Nicholson had huge interceptions, Nicholson, Paige, Amonett and Jace Logston passes defended, and Matt Bell led in tackles with 9, and Burge had 7.

NC plays GC next Monday to end out the season.
