It was Homecoming 2017 and before a packed house, NC totally dismantled Mt Vernon 56-36 that wasn’t as close as the final score. From the start, NC was on the attack, as the Air Raid offense came out and moved the ball 80 yards, culminated in a 27 yard TD pass from Niah Williamson to Luke Bumbalough. Carter Brown’s pat made the score 7-0 NC. Mount Vernon scored on their possession on a swing pass that covered 46 yards and it was tied at 7. NC had to punt, and Gage Burk boomed a 48 yarder into the wind. MV moved the ball when on 4th down, Chandler Marcum lit up the MV receiver, and Dalton Clouse recovered. NC was moving when the first quarter ended.
On thw second play of the 2nd quarter, Williamson hit Bumbalough on a 13 yard TD and Brown was good making it 14-7. On the next series, Freshman Dylan Beck stepped in front of a MV pass and took it to the house, Brown good again, and NC led 21-7. MV scored on a misdirection 67 yard TD pass to cut it to 21-14. On the ensuing kickoff, Bumbalough fielded the ball at the 1, broke outside, and 99 yards later scored the TD, as Brown was good again making it 28-14. After trading punts and MV turning it over on downs, NC took possession with 1:06 left in the half. After a Dakota Durick 13 yard scamper gave NC a first down, Williamson hit Bumbalough on a 68 yard TD pass to make it 35-14 @ half.
MV got the ball the start the 3rd quarter and Dalton Clouse recovered his second fumble of the game. It took NC 5 plays when Williamson hit Nicholas Grieser on a 61 yard TD, with a great pick set by the ref, and Brown added the PAT to put NC up 42-14. NC held on defense, but a sack fumble by Williamson gave MV the ball and they scored, cutting it to 42-21. NC took possession and moved all the way down the field, aided by 33 and 30 yard Bumbalough receptions. Williamson took it himself from 3 yards out and Brown was good to make it 49-21 after 3.
MV was sacked 3 times on their possession starting the 4th, 2 by Clouse and one by Senior Bryton Tuttle, forcing a punt. NC took over and moved 49 yards, culminated by a Williamson to Triston Chesher 7 yard TD pass after Tytus Ragle absolutely leveled a MV defender on a catch and run from Bumbalough. Brown added the PAT and it was 56-21. MV scored twice late to make the final 56-36.
Offensively, the Air Raid was in full effect. Williamson completed 26-38 passes for 500 yards and 5 TDs, and ran for 1. Bumbalough had 15 catches for 273 yards and 3 TDs, plus the 99 yard kickoff return. Chesher caught 5 passes for 119 yards and a TD, Grieser 4 for 96 and a TD, and Ragle 2 for 12. Dakota Durick ran the ball 4 times for 37 yards, including 14 and 13 yard carries.
The defense came to play. Dalton Clouse had 3 sacks, 2 tackle for loss, 2 fumble recoveries and 9 tackles. Beck had 12 tackles and the pick 6, Stephen Spears 12 tackles, Grieser 11 and 2 passes defended, Travis Reeves 9 tackles, Mason Hardwick 8 tackles and an int., Marcum 5 tackles and a forced fumble, and Gage Burk, Caleb Pierce, and Bryce Pinkard all 6.
It was a great day, perfect weather, and a dominating victory. NC moves to 4-3, and plays at New Pal next Friday night. Sectional draw is Sunday. These boys can do it. Believe it.
