The New Castle Middle School boys cross country team took second of four teams at Mt Vernon. Pendleton was first with 23 points. NC was second with 43, followed by host Mt Vernon with 69, and Knightstown 154.
In the teams”s first meet, facing host Mt Vernon, Knightstown, and last year Conference runner-up Pendleton (in their third meet of the season), NC took second. Missing their top returning runner Caleb Grow due to a pre -season injury, returning members Trey Miller and Jonah Merida took up the challenge of breaking up the early Pendleton lead pack. They took third and sixth place respectively in times of 10:47 and 11:24. Jakwan Guerrero took 8th in his first ever xc meet, Simon Miller, after a year away from the team, returned to a scoring position with 12th , and new member eighth grader Skylar Dickey rounded out the scoring with 14th place. Merrick Lawson was 15th just a second back with a huge Personal Record by over a minute from last year’s best. Gabe Kitchell trailed Lawson by just another second for 16th.
Sixth graders Colton Lawson and Gavin Frazier, along with eighth grade Luke Mills, had impressive runs for their first time out , placing in the top half in a competitive field.
The team will race at Rushville next Wednesday.
