Game Recap

New Castle’s season came to an end at Delta Friday night, losing 27-7. Delta received the kickoff and 3 plays in Luke Bumbalough tipped a pass and it was intercepted by Nicholas Grieser and he returned it 25 yards to Delta’s 30 yard line. The Trojans couldn’t take advantage of it, turning it over on downs. Delta’s running back broke a big run, and eventually Delta scored going up 7-0. After an NC punt, Delta tried to throw it again and Grieser intercepted it again, giving the Trojans the ball at the Delta 49. NC’S offense struggled to move the ball and the first quarter ended with NC down 7-0. Nic Broyles left the game with a separated shoulder in the first quarter, limiting the big play power of the Trojans. Delta scored twice in the second quarter and NC was down 21-0 at half. The third quarter started with NC moving the ball down the field, but couldn’t punch it in, turning it over on downs. Delta scored on a run and NC was down 27-0 after 3. In the 4th quarter, senior Joe Thompson took over at qb and the Trojans finally hit paydirt with Joe finding his brother James Thompson for a 4 yard TD with 18 seconds left and Alex Loveless hit the PAT out of the hold of Grieser to make the final 27-7.

Offensively for NC, QB Niah Williamson completed 10 of 16 passes for 140 yards. Bumbalough had 6 catches for 113 yards, Triston Chesher 3 for 27, and James Thompson 2 for 41 and the TD. Raul Banda ran it 13 times for 34 yards and Nate Woodard 3 for 21. Joe Thompson was 2-4 for 41 yards and the TD, and ran it 6 times for 21 yards.

Defensively, Mason Bowers had 16 tackles, Grieser had 7 tackles and 2 interceptions, Denver Cooley, Banda, and Mark Winkle had 6 a piece, and Winkle had a sack.

NC finished the season with 3 wins, but were in every game. This team was one of the better NC teams in awhile, winning 2 conference games. We will miss the seniors, who led us this year. Loveless, Howe, Bowers, Thompson, Caldwell, Banda, Winkle, Woodard, Gutierrez, Cooley, Cole, and Jester leave a legacy that the underclassmen will try to continue.
