New Castle traveled to West Chase Golf Course for the Brownsburg Invite on Saturday.
When the Trojans arrived, the weather had already turned bad. Sprinkling showers quickly changed into moderate to heavy rain with the winds picking up around 10 am. Combine the rain with the temperature and all would agree that it was a pretty miserable day for golf.
Wet grips were a big problem for the Trojans. Club slipping led to errant shots for all players in the field. A few Trojans even lost complete control of their grip. Spencer Stewart lost control of his 6 iron right after impact and the club left his hands and ended up 30 yards down the fairway.
The Brownsburg coach eventually saw conditions weren’t getting any better and cut the event to 9 holes.
Scores were calculated relative to par since the event was under a shotgun format and all players hadn’t played the same holes.
New Castle shot +25 as a team and placed 2nd out of 20 teams. 4 strokes behind the champs, Fishers, who shot +21.
New Castle Scores:
Blake Wheeler +2
Jacob Campbell +6
Kole Schofield +8
Brady Wheeler +9
Trevor Turner +13
Blake Wheeler finished in 2nd place as an individual with his +2 score. Blake played solid and accepted the fact that malfunctions would happen under the conditions. He kept a positive attitude and finished strong.
New Castle was asked to bring 2 markers to compete as individuals since some teams had dropped out. Our 2 individuals were Spencer Stewart and Tyler Tompkins. Really proud of the performance and grind of these two golfers. Both putted the ball beautifully.
New Castle Individual Scores:
Tyler Tompkins +6
Spencer Stewart +7
New Castle will host Yorktown at Westwood G.C. on Monday.
