New Castle High School
TROJANS WIN! TROJANS WIN! TROJANS WIN!!! In a game for the ages, New Castle defeated Richmond in first round sectional action 21-20 with no time remaining. Dylan Darling scrambled left and let fly a 41 yard TD pass to Robbie Witham in the back of the end zone. With the score tied, Jordan May hit the extra point and the Trojans move on to a match up at Delta next week. New Castle was down 20-7 with only 3:30 remaining when Joe Thompson picked off a Richmond pass giving the Trojans the ball and life. 4 plays later Dalton Engle scored from one yard out and May added the extra point cutting the lead to 20-14. After an unsuccessful onside kick, NC held Richmond and forced a punt with 41 seconds remaining. The Trojans took possession and ran a beautiful hook and ladder from Engle to Renner to Darling for 39 yards, giving us the ball inside Richmond territory. After a 7 yard completion to Darling from Engle, the stage was set for one of the greatest endings ever to a New Castle football game. DARLING TO WITHAM, AND THE TROJANS RING THE VICTORY BELL!!!
Offensively for the Trojans, Engle was 13-24 passing for 171 yards, rushed 12 times for 12 yards and had the 1 TD. Dylan Darling was 3-5 passing for 61 yards and 2 TDs and caught 7 passes for 110 yards. Brady Renner ran 7 times for 27 yards and had 6 catches for 52 yards and 1 TD. Cody Werking ran 9 times for 32 yards and had 2 receptions for 22 yards. Robbie Witham had 5 carries for 23 yards and 2 catches for 47 yards including “the catch” that won the game.
Defensively, Mason Bowers had 11 tackles and 6 assists, Dylan Hicks had 7 tackles and 2 assists, Nate Woolard 5 tackles 3 assists, Mark Winkle 4 tackles, 2 assists and a deflection, and Joe Thompson had an Interception, along with Witham. Uriah Howe had a huge pass deflection in the end zone on the first drive of the game, and Richmond missed a field goal.
Jordan May made all 3 of his extra point tries, and punted the ball 6 times for 222 yards, including a 60 yard punt that pinned Richmond deep in their territory.
NC travels to Delta next week. The Trojans are 1-0 this postseason.
