Boys basketball practice started on Monday, but the boys have been ready to get back on the court for quite some time. 2013-14 saw Coach Daniel Cox’s first team go 9-13, but the record does not tell how competitive this young team was. Of their 13 losses, 8 were decided by fewer than 10 points, with 5 of those by less than 5 points. Returning 3 starters, the 2014-15 Trojans will look to turn the corner as they build on last year’s experience.
Returning players made up 69% of last year’s scoring. Abe Haler led the way, averaging a team high 13.9 ppg. Junior Andrew Garrett (9.5 ppg), and senior Kyle Bumbalough (7.2 ppg) are the top returning scorers for the Trojans. Seniors Evan Vonderheide and Joe Ellson will look to be major contributors for the Trojans on both ends of the floor.
The Trojans will face several new opponents and a more difficult schedule in 2014-15. Making their official debut in the Hoosier Heritage Conference, New Castle will look to establish a position amongst a very competitive field. Perennial 4A power Carmel returns to the field house for the first time since the 1996-97 season, and Martinsville will make their first appearance in New Castle.
The Trojans will host Green and White night on Wednesday, November 12th, with Optimist teams scrimmaging at 6:00 PM, followed by a varsity inter-squad scrimmage. New Castle will host Fishers for a scrimmage on 11/18/2014 at 6:00 PM, and then will tip off their season against county rival Blue River on November 25th (JV – 6:00 PM / Varsity – 7:30 PM).Notable Games: @ Guerin Catholic (3A semi-state qualifiers) JV-6:00PM /Varsity-7:30 PM @ Mt.
