The Lady Trojans soccer team came into the sectional championship game 17-0 and emerged as sectional champions for the 5th straight year, beating the host Richmond Red Devils 7-1 to continue their perfect season.
The game didn’t always look so one-sided, as the Red Devils struck first on a shot from 30-yards out by Abbie Scott, giving Richmond the 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. In the 18th minute, the Trojans would strike back by way of a goal by Olivia Malott and assist by Courtney Denney. “I think we were just getting used to the conditions early on,” New Castle head coach Brett Smith said. “I was a little nervous that they scored first, but the girls didn’t panic. They just needed to get used to the field, and get re-acclimated with the style of play on the turf.”
New Castle scored the go-ahead goal in the 23rd minute when Delanee Frye converted on a lower far-post shot on a breakaway attempt. The Lady Trojans took a 2-1 lead into the half.
The defensive adjustments made at the half stifled any attempt the Red Devils made at the goal, holding them to only long distance shots for the remainder of the game. Meanwhile, the Lady Trojans offense settled down and began to put together a consistent attack. The scoring in the second half began with Anna Smith’s one-touch goal in the 46th minute. Over the course of the next eight minutes, Cassie Underwood, Courtney Denney, Calissa Centner, and Olivia Malott each added a goal to push the lead to 7-1.
With the win, the Lady Trojans are now 18-0 on the season, and will face a formidable foe in #17 Columbus North in the semifinal round of the regional at East Central High School. They will play on Wednesday at 5:00 PM.
