Seeing Greenfield-Central in the opening game was not new for the Trojans. However, this time there was more on the line as it was the first official contest for New Castle in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. In a back-and-forth affair, the Trojans earned a hard fought 5-4 overtime victory.
The Trojans’ three goals in regulation came off of headers from Kenny Martin (assisted by Tyler Broyles), Tyler Broyles (assisted by Ryan Jones), and Ryan Jones (assisted by Tyler Broyles). The Cougars responded to a 3-2 deficit with a goal in the 60th minute, resulting in a 3-3 tie that brought us to the end of regulation.
Greenfield-Central struck first in overtime, taking a 4-3 lead with 3 minutes remaining in the first overtime period, but the Trojans quickly answered on a free kick from Jones that skipped past the keeper. With the game knotted at 4-4, New Castle made a push inside the 18 that drew a hand ball call on the Cougars. Ryan Jones successfully executed the penalty kick, giving the Trojans a 5-4 lead that would hold through the second overtime period.
Close games are not foreign between these two programs. Greenfield-Central defeated New Castle last year 2-1 on a late game goal. In 2012, New Castle beat the Cougars 1-0, and in 2011, the game was a 1-1 tie.
New Castle travels to Connersville on Thursday, and will return home for a tough HHC matchup against Mt. Vernon.
