Girls Junior Varsity Softball, Girls Varsity Softball · Lady Trojans take down Cathedral to win regional

The Lady Trojans were in unfamiliar territory.  Having already won the first sectional title in 23 years, not many knew what to expect going into regional.  What they knew was they would be facing a formidable foe in the form of Cathedral, a team that was 20-10 on the season.  Hopes were high after a 2-run home run by Alaynie Woollard in the bottom of the third inning.  Cathedral then plated five in the fifth inning, taking a 5-2 lead.  At the time, this lead seemed insurmountable.  Cathedral’s Katy Baumgartner had only surrendered four hits going into the bottom of the seventh.  Three of those hits were to sophomore Harley Walls, and the fourth was the home run by Woollard.

By the time the Lady Trojans came to the plate in the seventh, the baseball team, fresh off of their comeback victory over Richmond for the sectional title in Greenfield, had made their way to Pendleton to cheer them on.  Senior Abbey Renner led off with a single, and Chloe Rivers followed with a double.  Destiny Heard found the gap, driving in a run to close the gap to 5-3, and McKinley Duvall doubled to make it a one run game.  Step to the plate Harley Walls.  With one out, Walls drove a well-hit ball to center field that was undoubtedly bringing in Hali Griffey (pinch running for Heard) to tie the game.  However, when the ball was misfielded, McKinley Duvall made the turn and headed for home.  As if it were fate, the Lady Trojans proved that they could pull off a comeback of their own, defeating Cathedral 6-5.

New Castle (23-6) will face Floyd Central (25-4) in the Center Grove semi-state.  They will play the first game of the session, which is scheduled to start at 11:00 AM.  They will be followed by Decatur Central and Bloomington South, with the winners facing off at 7:00 PM with a trip to the state finals on the line.  Tickets are $9 for the day (includes all 3 games), or $6 per session (There are two sessions).  Tickets are required for anyone school age or older.
