|The season looked like it was coming to an end. New Castle was playing Anderson in the sectional semifinal, a rematch of a 5-4 win for the Trojans earlier in the season. Anderson jumped out to an early lead, eventually expanding it to 7-0 after 5.5 innings of play.In the bottom of the 6th, Kenny Martin led off with a solo home run that at the time seemed to be too little too late. That home run ignited a hitting frenzy from the Trojans, who closed the gap to 7-4 at the end of the 6th, giving New Castle hope. However, in the top of the 7th, the Indians’ bats came alive once again, and they added three more runs, to push the lead to 10-4.
New Castle was in desperation mode, but it appeared as if the Trojan batters were as calm as ever. Hit after hit, the Trojans just kept chipping away at the lead. Martin led off with a double, and Grant Malott earned a walk. Tyler Smith followed up with a single, and Cory Isenbarger drilled a 2 RBI single, to make it 10-6. Bryce Stephenson added a 2 RBI double to close the gap to 10-8.
Dylan Darling, who subbed in for an injured Cayden Smekens in the 6th inning, got his 2nd hit of the night in the form of an RBI triple to make it a one-run game with only one out. Garrett Welch hit the game-tying RBI single, and it appeared that New Castle would be able to finish it out with runners on the corner and only one out. Anderson managed to close out the inning and sent the game into extras
After a scoreless 8th, New Castle worked out of a jam in the top half of the 9th, and loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 9th. It was Malott’s turn at the plate, and the senior made solid contact, hitting the ball to the fence and completing the most improbable of comebacks.
New Castle will face the Richmond Red Devils in the sectional championship tonight at 6:00 PM at Greenfield-Central High School.
