|It hadn’t happened since 1991. The Lady Trojans softball team earned their way to the sectional championship game by defeating Connersville 12-0, and Pendleton Heights 2-0. A Richmond team playing at their best had defeated Anderson and a tough Mt. Vernon team to play opposite the Trojans. It was a tight game throughout, as the Trojans were clinging to a 1-0 lead after four innings. New Castle would add one in the top of the fifth, but Richmond would string together some hits to score one and put runners in scoring position with 2 outs. A hard hit ground ball to the shortstop Alaynie Woollard looked like it could be trouble as Woollard wasn’t going to be able to get her glove over to make the catch with a Red Devil runner passing by. Instinctively, Woollard reached out and caught the ball barehanded, and rifled it over to first to end the inning and preserve the 2-1 Trojan lead.New Castle added two more runs in the 6th to extend the lead to 4-1. In the top of the 7th, Alaynie Woollard hit her 4th home run in 3 sectional games, giving the Trojans a more comfortable 5-1 lead. Renner closed out the Red Devils in the circle, and the Lady Trojans brought home their first sectional crown in 23 years.
The Lady Trojans will face the winner of sectional 10. Arsenal Tech and Cathedral face off tonight for the chance to play Lawrence Central in the championship game. New Castle is now 22-6 heading into the regional.
